Champagne!

I was following the case with attention and I'm very glad about the epilog. :D

Thanks to Thomas for writing Free42, giving it to the world and ensuring the licensing model he chooses is respected.
Thanks to SM for realizing the DM42 and for their decision to release the source code as required by GPL V2.
Thanks to grsbanks for is work on the forum and help on this topics.
Thanks to the community who asked for, supports and looks after SM's DM42 and licensing compliance.

I'm confident that the DM42 will be more than Free42's embodiment but the starting point of several tremendous projects.

Cheers.
Jean-Christophe.

Please see https://www.swissmicros.com/License_Statement.php

Dear SwissMicros customers,
...
In the next few days, we will be releasing the full source code to be able to build your own DM42 firmware. All components of DM42 will be open-sourced. We think that this is the right thing to do and hopefully with the help from community, we can accelerate the development of DM42's software on Github.

Full source code will be available at: http://github.com/swissmicros/DM42.

We ask for your patience as we prepare the source code for a public release.

Thank you,
Michael Steinmann
SwissMicros
Dear Michael,

do you have any updates for the community/ your customers?
Please have also a look at http://www.hpmuseum.org/forum/thread-10 ... l#pid95825 ff.
An interim statement would be helpful.

Thank you in advance,
Thomas

There's a contradiction built in this statement from the beginning: "few days" vs. "patience". The "few days" are definitly over - people in the US are getting excited again. They are used to more public statements FWIW. So I concur it might be appropriate to give them a second one before the pot starts boiling again.

Michael has now posted an update:
Dear SwissMicros customers,

Thank you for your support as we go through the source code compliance activities. On April 6 2018, we released a statement saying that we will ensure our users can compile modified Free42 source code into a custom DM42 firmware version. We have been occupied with analyzing a vast labyrinth of DM42 source code with multiple licensing terms which are difficult to coagulate. We underestimated the time required to anatomize the source code — i.e, to satisfy compliance from all parties and ensure accurate, truthful and fair licensing terms.

We appreciate your patience and you can expect an update from us within 3-4 weeks due to upcoming travel schedule. Michael Steinmann will be on a business trip from April 25 to May 2nd followed by a vacation until May 14 during which time we will not be shipping orders.

Sincerely,
SwissMicros Team

Thanks for the update Michael.

I, for one, appreciate your honesty and candor about how refactoring DM42 code for License compliance is a bigger job than initial estimates, and also want to support your stated goals of "accurate, truthful and fair licensing terms" even if this means it will take longer. Further, stating when to expect the next update seems wise as there seem to be some folks that are more eager than I can understand for resolution; updates like this do help it seems. Hopefully, they are pressing for resolution simply because they are eager to purchase a DM42 once these issues have been addressed. I also hope those that purchase one will be as active in testing and using the new DM42 version, and possibly even contributing to the open source DM42 firmware they are so eagerly demanding.

It's been seven weeks since Michael started this thread, writing "In the next few days, we will be releasing the full source code to be able to build your own DM42 firmware."

Seven weeks is quite a bit more than any reasonable interpretation of "a few days." A progress report would be nice at this point.
