Hidden Matrix Functions

Post by Guenter »

Just saw this article http://www.hpmuseum.org/forum/thread-8887.html It describes three hidden fuction on the HP42S, not available on Free42. Given that now large matrices are possible (database) at least the [FIND] command woiuld be very useful. Any chance to see it in Free42?

100% chance. Those functions have been in Free42 since 2004.

I checked these long ago, was waiting for someone to comment. Cool (and exactly correct) that you kept them hidden (not visible in the Fcn list).

How could I assume you would not include these functions? I tried it yesterday on the DM42 to no avail, although it worked on my HP42S. By some magical influence it works today also on the DM42. ;)

Well, that's understandable. Functions with square brackets in their names are just asking for typos, which may even have been the point of the unknown person at HP who decided that the 42S should not have these functions, yet also couldn't bring him/herself to remove them.

Maybe I took the 42S compatibility thing a bit too far by leaving them out of the FCN catalog. :D

As long as you're breathing, it's not too late! At least that's what mia nonna used to say. Of course she only spoke Italian so I may have mistranslated it.
Come to think of it, she may have been giving me a recipe for minestrone.

Way before italian there was latin: Dum spiro, spero.
Your translation is fine.

I've long wondered why only the functions with names in brackets were hidden. Perhaps that was done intending to mean they should be removed, or maybe brackets were included to reinforce the functions were used for Matrix operations. Either way, as they work properly, it's curious they weren't documented.

And IMHO, keeping them hidden is another good example of just how precisely compatible Free42 is. Appreciated by aficionados. :D

HP42s Hidden Matrix Functions - Joe Horn - 19881109.pdf is nothing but a cosmetic PDF version of the original ASCII text file by Joe. I just formatted the original text.
This link will be available from MailBigFile until 2017-12-28. I suppose SM could make it available from their server, should they find it of any use/value.

[EDIT] I have corrected the author's name. Thanks, Bob.
[EDIT #2] I have updated the link.
