The phone company chose that because of the letters associated with the keys.
Late to the game here, but the phone company (MaBell) actually elected to reverse the order of the touch-tone" keys vs. the "standard" adding machine keyboard specifically to slow down office workers that could key in numbers on an adding machine faster than the phone system could interpret the tones.

Have you ever noticed that the numpad on your keyboard is oriented for left hand use and not right hand? That enter key is placed for the left hand’s thumb. You would have worked the adding machine with your left hand while your right hand made entires in the ledger with pen or pencil. Unless of course you were a southpaw like me, and then you were relegated to chopping wood in the forest.

Hi all,

There is a new wp43s.exe for your PC available in a gitlab next to you. You can now not only convert feet, stones, acres, and the like but lĭ, zhàng, mŭ, etc. as well. Yes, there are traditional measures present in China, too, though pragmatically linked to SI nowadays. 43S now features 95 unit conversions over all from weird and strange stuff to SI and vice versa. Try and enjoy!

The set of manuals was updated a few minutes ago. Enjoy reading. Any feedback (error reports, questions, remarks, etc.) will be appreciated.

Our software department will need some time to catch up. Anybody willing to support us will be highly appreciated. For those fearing to be occupied for years we can presently offer one position as maternity leave replacement for 18 months.

Thanks in advance.

Bob, even you don't have to know everything. 8-)

Within our gigantic software department, the odds for somebody being on maternity leave are significant just for statistical reasons alone. Even better without twins, Håkon. There's a temporary opportunity for whoever wants to step in now - I just wanted to let you know about it so you won't cry when it's gone. If you feel you've got suitable abilities, please speak up. :geek:

Please allow me emphasizing once more that all numeric output on the WP43S uses the (usual) large font, for both types of integers, real, and complex numbers:

Just long integers requiring more than 21 digits will turn to the small font automatically for space reasons. And SHOW does to allow for displaying 34 digits per real number and 296 for long integers. For sake of clarity only...

I assume that the clarity you provided is required as my post of last night regarding larger fonts might not have been clear enough, so let me be clear, no offence was intended, there is absolutely no issue with the 43S number display and although I am sure that you like your consistent use of large and small fonts, I tweaked mine a bit with variable fonts, and although my C43 derivative presents results a little different, it has no more digits, no more data, and no more accuracy than the parent WP43S, which still is the source and without which there is no C43.

For further clarity after your post here, I made a quick side by side comparison PDF to illustrate the differences. My drive to increase font size started about a year ago after this post by Haakon, which made me realize that I am one of those who wants larger letters.

There was no offense taken. I just missed a few minor points in your post and, instead of pointing to them, I found it easier to show how the screen actually looks.

Thanks for the 'differences' page. Certainly greater characters are easier to read. I think, however, as long as our users can read the labels on the bezel and the softkeys their eyes are good enough for other challenges, too. And nobody ever complained about label size there (nor on the DM42 nor DM41X). Being 66, I know what I'm talking about.

Fallback: As you know, the large character set includes everything required for echoing all our commands, so it's easy to switch character sets if needed. I don't expect this necessity for the reason stated above though.
