Why not a DM17BII?

General discussion about calculators, SwissMicros or otherwise

How about a DM17BII?

Great idea, I want to have one!

Why not a DM17BII?

Post by jthole »

There is an excellent iOS emulator for one of my favourite HP calculators, the HP 17BII: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/17bii-pro/id338125516

Having that software in a DM calculator (DM42 form factor) would be a dream come true for me! I am sure that a collaboration sounds easier than it is in practice, but why not give it a try? There is an extremely useful mix of financial, statistical, and mathematical functions, plus the excellent solver.

Edit: I just realised that I already asked the same question in 2019 ... but it's still valid ;) viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2278

(While you can still pickup the original HP 17BII for little money, it doesn't have real I/O options, only a mediocre screen, and it lacks all of the improvements of the 17BII Pro iOS app ... the functionality of that app in a SwissMicros package would be my "one calculator to rule them all") :D

+-/* keys are on the wrong side of the keyboard.
enter key missing (disguised as input key)
a = key on a HP calc, really ?

Sorry but this thing does not look even remotely like a HP calc

EDIT: i suggested once the production of a DM blanknut, this could help those port their favorite calc to the DM platform without investing in a dedicated calc or butchering the keyboard of a DM41 or DM42.
Labelsets and good overlays could help, I would buy one to convert in a WP43.

EM,

yes, really.

The Picture shows a HP 17bII+, which has arithmetic and RPN input. There are other differences, in particular the SOLVE function, which is more (!) sophisticated on the HP 17b and HP 17bII.

You may have a look at the HP-booklet "HP 27S HP 19B Technical Applications", edition 2, November 1988, on advanced solver techniques. Applies also to the HP 17b and HP 17bII.

Why a plagiarism of a current HP calculator?
My programmable calculators - former: CBM PR100, HP41CV, HP28S, HP11C - current: HP48G(256kB), HP35S, Prime, DM41X, DM42

Because it is not a current one? The HP 17BII+ (the current one) is crippled, because it is slower in parts than the 17BII, and because the L() and G() functions are implemented incorrectly.

The 17BII Pro app (without the "plus") has the correct solver. Just like the real HP 17BII, which is discontinued.

The app has various skins; this one looks best on an iPhone screen.

As I said before; the app has the correct solver (I use L() and G(), plus variable recall, pretty often). It is the current HP calculator that has the crippled implementation.

With all of the functionality of the 17BII, I can live with the "=" key, because you never have to go into algebraic mode anyway.

A SwissMicros implementation could simply remap that "=" key, of course, if they would work with RLM Software, the app developer.

The +-/* keys are in the right place for any Voyager user, and were maybe placed like that as a concession to the 12C users? Since my main calculator is a HP 11C, I would be happy with that layout personally.

I'd be pushing for a DM71, personally. ;)

The outcome of this poll looks to me like a landslide victory of the kind DT achieved recently. ;) Shall we count again?
WP43 SN00000, 34S, and 31S for obvious reasons; HP-35, 45, ..., 35S, 15CE, DM16L S/N# 00093, DM42β SN:00041

Well, seems like I'm in the minority anyway

(BTW, I think a DM71 would be much more of a challenge than a DM17BII [note, not a Plus])
