New to DM41X and HP-41CX: What am I missing?

Post by JDTucker »

I am new to the HP-41, though not to HP calculators in general. I have been going through the "HP-41CX Owner's Manual, Volume I" to get familiar with the operation of the HP-41 aspects of my new DM41X. I hit a bump or two, but have overcome them, for the most part.

However, I find myself stuck in Section 8. I can create, clear, resize, seek, and purge the file. What I can't do is edit the file. {XEQ]{alpha]{ED][alpha] returns "NONEXISTANT": I can't seem to enter text editing mode.

Clearly, I am missing something! I'd be grateful if someone could let me know where I've gone wrong.

Did you place the file name in the alpha register ?

HPMike;
Yes, since that is required for all of the text file manipulations I was successful in performing: create, resize, seek, clear and purge. In this care, the file name is 'TERP'.

OK, I tried it myself and got the same result, so I don't why it didn't work. I've never used the Text Editor myself, since I only owned a HP41CV, which lacks this capability, and only recently received my DM41X. I'm sure someone far more knowledgeable on this forum will be able for figure it out.

Thanks for trying, anyway. Maybe someone else has been successful with this, and can explain what it is I’m missing...

Actually, now that I think about it, “nonexistent” usually means that the function itself does not exist. IOW, the DM41X does not recognize the function named ED. So, the developers of the DM41X need to answer this question for you.

From the manual:

3.9.4. Extensions to the ED function (ASCII file editor)
Done to support lower case and special characters. The function has been renamed ED$ to signal the additional capabilities. Same XROM code of course.

Peet;
Thank you! I hadn't read through the DM41X manual yet, so as to get familiar with the HP-41CX basic operations first, before going on to the the extensions offered by the DM41X. I guess I'll just have to get used to reading everything at once!
