Post by ecsfang »

When connected to a PC with USB cable, the DM41X appears as a DM42 device:

That's just the volume label. You can rename it to whatever you want.

Note: If you format the FAT drive using the built-in DMCP menu, the volume name is "DM41X", though it's likely easier to just rename it using your PC or Mac in File Explorer or Finder.

We'll have to check the default set during the shipping prep process, though this is obviously just a cosmetic artifact.

Thanks for noting it though.

My DM41X also appears as a DM42 in the device manager regardless of the FAT name.

Interesting observation, will report this to David. Thanks.

But note that this has no functional impact, it does not change how anything behaves.

Just another observation, when I connected the DM41X to a Linux machine it showed up correctly as "DM41X", and after that it also shows up as "DM41X" on my Windows machine (where it first appeared as "DM42").

So, without me doing anything (no reformatting or changing name), the device has "renamed" itself and shows up correctly.
For me it apparently was the the first few times when it was connected to a Windows machine that it showed up as "DM42".

Note that I don't have any DM42, so the name must have come from the device - not an old name residing in the PC.

Don't ask me how, but similar to Schrödingers cat, apparently both name existed in the calculator - but it have now settled with "DM41X" ... ;)

Again - no harm done - just an observation ... ;)

Cheers,
Thomas

In my case in linux.

DM41Xβ shows as SwissMicDM42 in the device overview and as DM41X on the desktop
DM41X shows as SwissMicDM42:DM41X in the device overview and as DM41X on the desktop
Dm42 shows as SwissMicDM42 in the device overview and as DM42 on the desktop

(The beta has a reformatted/flashed DM42 board because of a defective board change)

In disk management they all show as SwissMicDM42 (2.71)
So my guess its the disk model hardcoded in some part of the chip or its controller and the operating system of the host pc sometimes doesn't know how to show the thing correct.
In linux you can go to /media/your username as root and delete devices that you unplugged and are still present causing these problems
In windows there is probably also a method.

Not a defect or bug because a USB stick without label also shows up as its brand name.
