i will wait for the finished product and its titanium Swiss cnc machined spring loaded keys :D
ok i may step down to anodized aluminium if the calculator is graded IP67
I bet you'll get stainless steel. But certainly not IP67 on the keyboard side.
Thanks Walter for the reply !
Stainless steel is great too ! 8-)
Will it be for the back-plate between the keys ?
Some spring steel 1.4310 ? or mild 1.4301 ? (SUS301 and SUS304 oversea standard)

But joke apparts, as a tool for engineers who go "on the field" , an "ultimate" calculator could benefit being quite rugged.
Our smartphones are now mostly IP67, but without any keyboards obviously that makes them pretty difficult to use with nitrile gloves.

BTW, i just ordered today my first Swiss Micro, a DM42 :P

Otterbox used to make nice covers for calculators and electronics in general, I had one for my palm T5 once but they seem to make only iphone and samsung crap nowadays.
However this kind of cover is very useful and cheap to keep a calculator dry even in full rain https://www.amazon.co.uk/Waterproof-Mpo ... B01LKIAPFK
Just an example, you can find these everywhere in several sizes.

Do you need a calculator or a way to stop a bullet?
He lives in France, not in the US of A. 8-)
OK, folks. Time to put a stop to this.

This thread is supposed to be about the WP43S, not about politics. Quite apart from anything else, insinuating that you need bullet protection if you live in the USA because NRA members are running around shooting people is disingenuous at best ...

Free speech was on the Agora of Athens 2500 years ago. When someone was implying something you didn't say, you were able to defend yourself, and the assembly of free citizens could judge. Here and now, after 2500 years of human progress, I can only ask you to read what is written above. See who introduced what in this thread and judge yourself.

For objective numbers in this matter, please consult suitable reference - easy to find, easy to calculate, unambiguous result.

Sometimes you don't need to say things literally to transmit the message.
This discussion started as a joke but goes way to far in my opinion.
In such cases I usually answer in the same way as the one asking the question.

As a sportshooter and gun owner (in The Netherlands) I am often asked if I shoot people.
I usually answer "only if they are made from the competition approved type of paper and don't move".
That closes the discussion most of time :D

Now lets talk about the WP43S, if I want to read about guns I have my other favourite places to go.

Thanks for the idea, i will try the one i already have and carry several times a week into my MTB backpack to protect my emergency kit from humidity and mud. 8-)
But the "window" is from a quite thick plastic, not sure i can type one key at a time on a calculator inside the bag....

BTW, militaries are equipped with rugged keyboards, so it means it is technicaly feasable !
Now the potential market for such a rugged calculator is maybe tiny as it is for rugged mass production smartphones.

But again, our society prefers to have short lasting products , difficult to repair (go try change your samsung Sx battery !) and easy to break that customers will replace on average every 3 years .... and after that we have that global warming issues of ours ! tsss ....

Rugged => Difficult to break => very long lasting product => no need to replace it, can last a life time, or at least until its functions are no more usefull in modern times (ie: change of standards, new needs etc ...) => less environmental impact overall 8-)
Of course "Rugged" needs more expensive materials than "disposable" (ie Stainless Steel vs cheap plasticum)

Also a "modular" approach may allow for product upgrades down the road (ie : MB replacement/update, screen replacement/update, keyboard replacement ...).
As a consequence, the product will be more bulky , heavy, expensive but at the end, we will all benefit from this on the long run.

Long story short, it may be a way for a small player like SM to differenciate from crapy-disposable-cheap-high-volumes products.

Just my few cents ;)

The "old" HP's were rugged but not waterproof and a HP41 would cost 1500 euro in todays money, I don't want to pay that for a calculator today.
In 1984 the 41 was my primary machine to do ALL my calculations, nowadays it is secondary and fun, my laptop with python and matlab is primary.
Unfortunately time has changed for calculators.
Swiss micros is not particularly cheap with 200 SFR for the DM42/41 but had good quality and, most important, features no other machine has.
This includes also the community you get for free with one :D

The old otterbox had a hardcase and a thin membrane, don't see them anymore, shame.

@EM41

I finally got the pouch that i always use for mountain biking from my "man's cave" and did some tests with some calculators, including my new DM42 :

And it works great ! 8-)
Keyboard still works and the screen is still visible.
I tried also a 50G OK.

Thanks for the idea !! :ugeek:
