Landscape format was’nt my stuff neither.
I actually like the landscape format for hand holding (better than the Pioneer format), so I am not sure yet what the DM41X would bring me, apart from looking gorgeous, and enabling ROMs I am probably never going to use anyway.

What might convince me would be a ROM that implements a HP 17Bii style equation solver!

I wish SM could introduce a DM17Bii at some point ;-) (but I understand there are all kinds of reasons why that is unlikely)

There were a number of calculators designed for landscape layout, and they weren't HP's worst for sure. But redesigning a portrait calculator to become a landscape one is a far greater task than simply shuffling keys. Unless there are really qualified layouters or UI designers investing sufficient thought and time into such a project, let portrait stay portrait and landscape remain landscape.

Personally, I think the 41L didn't and doesn't show the necessary effort in layouting. The 41X can only be better. Whether it will be better than the original, well, definite specs, documentation, and time will tell. Looking forward seing what was added to the HP-41CX and what was ditched. Before, it's too early to assess.

Since it doesn't have the expandability of the original, it won't be better for me. :(

I bought a moving blanket but it just sits there.

You mean :

* HPIL
* Barcode reader
* Magnetic card reader
* HP printer (costing an arm to buy)
* And don't forget power supply :D
* etc...

Honnestly, I don't think we need that past technology today : we have more of that with a PC/USB connection don't you think ?

Most people don't need it but we have a lot of lab equipment that still uses HPIL and a lot of HP 67 mag cards. We don't use bar codes but printing to a real dot matrix printer would be great.

The 82440A/B is a real dot matrix printer :)

But I suppose you mean the type you can hear printing from 25 yards away...

Hee hee! I'd settle for any printer that used least 8.5" width on non-thermal paper. Even a laser printer would be nice.

I have an HP LJ-2100 that has a built-in IR receiver, which works fine with several Sharp Wizard and Zaurus products, but sadly the IR output from the DM41X will not produce any useful out (I presume, but will check to be sure; stay tuned for an update tomorrow).
