Facts...
1) I have 4 swissmicros calculators (although I bough 5 and unfortunately one DM42 was lost by the local mail)... that makes a few 100 $ investment... I would have bought many more DM42 if I had not a keyboard problem...
2) HP41C was my first calculator in early 80's when I was 17 ❤. I love the DM41L lansdcape format, the quality of the DM42 (except of course the ENTER key not registrating on the left side 😪) and is excited by the announcement of DM41X.
3) I will try to participate in DM41X beta program and give as many feedback as possible (I reported few "bugs" on DM1x/41L)
4) I am willing to buy at least 3 DM41X to support Swissmicros (if keyboard problems are solved)
5) I understand 100% that Michael and David are overbooked by their heavy agenda correcting and pushing new stuff, and not the best communicators there is 😜, and I understand that some great people are helping them on the communication...

....
But...
(and there is always a "but")
...

I would have prefered discovering and learning about DM41X first in this forum... and I am still waiting for some info here!

Keep the good job going 👍👍👍, but please 🙏🙏🙏 improve your faithful community communication please...

Just my 0.02 cents...
Cordialement, Sincerely,
Boubker.

but the downside of slow, inconvenient PC transfer.
I agree with you for the ROM update which you only do a couple of times per year, otherwise the 41CL is a very hard NUT to crack! :D

heh :)

I didn't mean to sound critical on that point; I love my 41CL (currently inoperative, hopefully fixed soon), and Sylvain's improvements for incremental updates make it easy and efficient to do that via serial. I look forward to doing that when mine is working.

I was thinking more about backing up, transferring my programs to and from the unit. I do have a PIL-Box, and an HP-IL module, so I am going to try that, as an alternative.

But a USB-based method, as I hope might be available on the DM41X (still not found time to watch the video) would be nice, too.

I have never thought that you were complaining either.

What happened to your 41CL ?

Try that, you will also need one of the virtual HP-IL peripherals from the usual suspects. (Jean-François, Christoph or Joachim)

You need to convert your programs into RAW format first and like the DM42, when you connect the DM41X to your computer through USB, a flash drive is displayed and a simple copy/paste will do the job.

To me ...

The 41CL from Monte Dalrymple is the most advanced and flexible HP-41 implementation that ever existed.
In my mind using the original shell to host the updated motherboard was a genius idea, this allowed to use legacy hardware.
The counterpart of this is that it is a more complex beast to master.

The DM41X emulate the NUT CPU, has a bigger screen, has a USB interface, has an IR output but lack I/O ports.
David is planning to support 82143A printer implementation using infrared, to my knowledge HP-IL will not be supported, at least at first.
A possible HP-IL implementation through USB with the PIL-Box protocol communicating with virtual peripherals could be done but nothing has been promised along these lines.
From what I have seen, the first DM41X implementation will be more in line with what Antonio Lagana did with his i41CX+.
Note: Antonio is using Nonpareil NUT simulator from Eric Smith while David has written is own NUT simulator from ground-up.

FYI, I am not part of the Alpha tester group and can only report from what I have seen and discussed at HHC 2019.

Also remember that the 41CL has been in development since 2004, available since 2011 and is a mature product,
while the DM41X is currently in alpha testing mode and is not available yet.
I agree that it look promising and I hope that they get it right! ... we will see ...

hah! that is so silly of me; I knew your username looked familiar, but I forgot who was behind it :)

My 41CL stopped responding. I found that if I pressed hard between a few of the upper keys, it would come on, then go off again when I let go. Seemed to me to indicate a post problem. I bought it (as 41CL) from a place with excellent warranty, so it was posted back to them today for a fix.

thanks again for your suggestions, and I have to add thanks for all the excellent work you've done, and continue to do, in many areas of our hobby. It is much appreciated!

The 41CL seemed like a miraculous achievement, to me, and it's wonderful to have an original "enclosure" for it.

I agree the DM41X sounds like quite a different approach, but complementary and interesting; I look forward to playing with both, in different ways.

If David's NUT emulator is based on what he did for years for the DM41L, we should be confident to have at least in the first release a marvellous DM41X emulating HP41CX with DM42 platform bells and whistles...
... and I am ok to start using it at this level of compatibilty.

I also understand now    all the last enhancements to DM41L... Swissmicros team where preparing DM41X and retrofitting on the way some of the stuff to DM41L (no?)...

But if course we need more HP41 stuff in the DM41X so it can approach the brilliant HP41CL implementation...
I am confident that it is feasible in a very short time.

I love the HP41 plateform, may be it's because you never forget your first calculator and always try to get back to this first time sensations (same thing with "sex", always trying to got back to first sensations    )

To tell you the truth, I was really very very close to hit the "buy button" for a HP41CL + time module + serial cable at 700 Euros...
... and now I am waiting to buy 3x DM41X from SwissMicros for that price...

A big thank you to all the HP41 aficionados community...

Are you sure ?

Code: Select all

$235 USD : 41CL circuit board
$65 USD : Time Module board
$25 USD : Serial port connector
$7 USD : 3-D printed Port cover for serial
  $6 USD : Serial Cable
$50 USD : Priority Mail International Shipping (tracking & ins)
=========:
$388 USD : Total
$355 EUR : Total (exchange rate : 1 USD = 0,914280 EUR)
... of course you still need to have a fullnut HP-41C, CV or CX donor on top of the above.

Oh, yes I am!!!

You have to add the donor in good conditions (200-400 $ or €), may be change some (old) parts, and maybe add labor to make the transformation... (and you can find it for sale on a web site ready to ship for exactly 690 €)

So going from nothing to HP41CL costs around 3x going from nothing to DM41X
