Trouble installing CP210x USB to UART Bridge VCP Driver

Post by HPMike »

I tried to install the CP210x USB to UART Bridge VCP Driver for Windows 10 by right clicking on the silabser.inf file and selecting Install, but I get an error message from Windows that this INF file does not support this method of installation. "Operation is not allowed in WOW64." I need this to establish USB communications with my DM15L. What do I need to do to solve this problem. TIA.

Well, I've solved the problem by successfully installing the VCP driver on my 18 year old Windows XP desktop computer. It no longer connects to the internet, so I had to download all the files first to my Windows 10 computer, and then transfer them to the Windows XP computer via a USB flash drive. I was then able to flash my DM15L with the latest V16 firmware and connect to the PuTTY console to set the date and time and backup my calculator State.

Well, I've figured out the problem with installing the VCP drivers on my Win 10 machine. I was using the Silicon Labs driver package named CP210x Universal Windows Driver, when in fact I needed the package named CP210x VCP Windows. The latter has executable installers specifically for either x64 (64 bit) or x86 (32 bit) operating systems. I used the x64 installer on the Win 10 machine and it worked perfectly. The x86 installer was used on my Win XP machine. Interestingly, the port shows up as COM3 on my Win 10 machine, but COM5 on my Win XP machine.

Thanks for this update Mike. The "Universal" driver appears to be a recent edition on the download page, added since the last manual release.

I'll ask SM to add a note to the manual to NOT attempt to install the "CP210x Universal Windows Driver" pkg. in the next manual update.
