Since the DM41X will be a 41CL, it will handle the HP-IL commands, so...
I am pretty sure that the DM41X will offer a great HP-41 simulation with great extension, but the 41CL is a completely different platform and the above assumption is wrong.

You're right, of course. I apologize for the confusion. I have misinterpreted the possibility to load ROM images and automatically conclused on the functionality of the 41CL framework. Which of course is wrong to make such assumptions.
So it is not sure that HP-IL will be supported.

HP-IL would be great (as it would facilitate connecting to a world of devices) - but my basic requirement is more basic - just any bi-directional programatically manageable link.

Nothing has been promised for the HP-IL side, but I also agree that it would be wonderful if is was.
The best would be to simulate the HP-IL hardware registers so we could use virtual IL modules (HP-IL, Ext-IL, Ext-IO, Plotter, etc) and then implements what JFG has done with his PIL-Box but in pure software.

Yep, like implementing a USB communications device class (aka RS-232 over USB) and giving it access through a special DM41X Extension ROM, like Monte has done with his 'Yxxx' ROMs on the 41CL or like Antonio with his '-I41CX 30' ROM on his i41CX+ simulator. (although in i41CX+ case the transfer is not over RS-232 but over HTTP instead)

On reflection, I can easily settle with something even easier.

If I could have two commands on the 41 side, I would be happy: One that can save a text file to a place in the file tree and one that can read such a text file. Because if I have this, I can run a program on the 41 that polls for changes in that file and save what I need from calculations I do and have a polling on the PC side that does the same. A poor man's "serial link" - but it will suffice (for my needs).

I bought my first HP in 1978, it was an HP33e. I then skipped quickly to the fantastic HP 34c. I finally bought an HP41c late 1979, December if I remember well. Card reader followed one year later.

Today, I have of course a DM41L, but as many of us (?), I don’t like the portrait format. The DM42 is really the best calc I ever used at the time of writing.

Hope the DM41X will give me the maximum !

Michael, If you need beta testers, you can put me on the list.

PS : a DM15L is on its way, it should arrive by the end of this week.

Oh it’s just ok for an HP12c but NEVER for an HP41, never... not enough comfortable. I just can’t find my fingers.

Anyway it’s a very good clone, but just a clone. Nothing will give me back the “touch” of a real HP41... Except perhaps then forthcoming DM41X... wait and see.
