I didn't mean to sound critical on that point;
I have never thought that you were complaining either.

I love my 41CL (currently inoperative, hopefully fixed soon),
What happened to your 41CL ?

and Sylvain's improvements for incremental updates make it easy and efficient to do that via serial. I look forward to doing that when mine is working.
Thank you!

I was thinking more about backing up, transferring my programs to and from the unit. I do have a PIL-Box, and an HP-IL module, so I am going to try that, as an alternative.
Try that, you will also need one of the virtual HP-IL peripherals from the usual suspects. (
Jean-François,
Christoph or
Joachim)

But a USB-based method, as I hope might be available on the DM41X (still not found time to watch the video) would be nice, too.
You need to convert your programs into RAW format first and like the DM42, when you connect the DM41X to your computer through USB, a flash drive is displayed and a simple copy/paste will do the job.
To me ...
The
41CL from Monte Dalrymple is the most advanced and flexible HP-41 implementation that ever existed.
In my mind using the original shell to host the updated motherboard was a genius idea, this allowed to use legacy hardware.
The counterpart of this is that it is a more complex beast to master.
The DM41X emulate the NUT CPU, has a bigger screen, has a USB interface, has an IR output but lack I/O ports.
David is planning to support 82143A printer implementation using infrared, to my knowledge HP-IL will not be supported, at least at first.
A possible HP-IL implementation through USB with the PIL-Box protocol communicating with virtual peripherals could be done but nothing has been promised along these lines.
From what I have seen, the first DM41X implementation will be more in line with what
Antonio Lagana did with his i41CX+.
Note: Antonio is using
Nonpareil NUT simulator from Eric Smith while David has written is own NUT simulator from ground-up.
FYI, I am not part of the Alpha tester group and can only report from what I have seen and discussed at HHC 2019.
Also remember that the 41CL has been in development since 2004, available since 2011 and is a mature product,
while the DM41X is currently in alpha testing mode and is not available yet.
I agree that it look promising and I hope that they get it right! ... we will see ...
