# of stack fonts

Post by J-F Garnier »

Another minor mistake in manual v3.04b:

Section 2.25:
The calculator can use two fonts. See section Stack Font from chapter DM32 Setup for a preview and details.
However, section Stack Font from chapter DM32 Setup enumerates 5 fonts.

Might that be because it's two font types, but each with different options, e.g. type of zero?

Correct (sort of).

There are two font designs with variants:
  • SwissKeys (SwissMicros' custom font designed specifically for the keypad) with three flavors of character zero:
    • slashed zero
    • dotted zero
    • void (plain) zero
  • Legacy dot matrix:
    • emulated LCD segments of a 5×7 dot matrix
    • full stems, where the gaps between LCD segments are filled
While preferences vary, the choice was made to include our custom font and make it default because the high definition of the memory LCD allows to depict natural shapes of glyphs, with curved and oblique sections, with satisfying accuracy. It would not make sense not to leverage this kind of technical/optical capability. The font is also a pixel-interpretation of the font designed and used for the keypad, as an attempt to unify the overall visual feel for the unit.

From a user perspective, the option to select the dot matrix font is still there of course, and the setting survives RESETs. So those who don't like the custom font shouldn't have to endure it more than half a minute if all goes well. :)
