What's the difference between the DM42 and the DM32
Re: What's the difference between the DM42 and the DM32
My impression, from reading posts on this forum, and others:
The DM42 is an emulator of the HP-42s. As such it is highly programmable, with many functions under a menu tree.
The software is based on Free42, an independent recreation of the HP-42s, created and maintained by Thomas Okken.
The DM32 is a recreation of the HP-32Sii, primarily programmed by the Swissmicros team. The HP-32Sii is less programmable than the 42. More functions are directly available by keystrokes
The market for the original HP units was probably different, engineers and professionals versus a more educational target.
Regarding the Swissmicros hardware, the DM32 is based on a newer CPU, and will have an USB-C connection.
The DM42 is an earlier design, with a micro USB-b port.
I suspect that when supplies of the current DM42 hardware are gone, it will be sold on the new platform.
Others on the forum may have different opinions regarding the two calculators. I do hope they chime in with their impressions.

Re: What's the difference between the DM42 and the DM32
IN addition to what ctrclckws wrote (a good summary), here's another view:
The DM42 is more powerful with flexible programming features, but harder to learn to program well and less flexible for interactive calculations.
The DM32 is easier to just pick and use for calculations, but has less sophisticated and less flexible programming capabilities.
Each is best for different needs and intended use, so which is 'better' depends on your skills, needs and intended use.

Thank you for the correction in nomenclature. Sometimes the difference is in the definition.

Here is a PDF that compares the features of the following HP calculator models: HP-32S, HP-32SII, HP 35S and HP-42S
It is based on the comparison table available from the Museum of HP Calculators with additional information added.

Re: What's the difference between the DM42 and the DM32
I'd call Free42 an extremely good and comprehensive simulator of the HP-42S, and the DM42 a platform running Thomas' Free42.
WP43 SN00000, 34S, and 31S for obvious reasons; HP-35, 45, ..., 35S, 15CE, DM16L S/N# 00093, DM42β SN:00041
Re: What's the difference between the DM42 and the DM32
That file says the 32Sii is heavier than the 35S. My 35S (144 g) is heavier than my 32Sii (122 g). My 42S is 146 g.Steve Simpkin wrote: ↑Tue Jun 13, 2023 9:53 amHere is a PDF that compares the features of the following HP calculator models: HP-32S, HP-32SII, HP 35S and HP-42S

Re: What's the difference between the DM42 and the DM32
The weight of the HP-32S and HP-42S are from the Museum of HP Calculator’s existing comparison table. I used that weight for the HP-32SII also. The weight of the HP 35 came from Wikipedia. I don’t have a scale sensitive enough to weigh mine.Chumango wrote: ↑Tue Jun 13, 2023 9:25 pmThat file says the 32Sii is heavier than the 35S. My 35S (144 g) is heavier than my 32Sii (122 g). Re: What's the difference between the DM42 and the DM32
I weighed my HP 32S, HP 32SII, HP 42S and HP 35s using a postal scale accurate to ±3 g and ±0.3 oz with the following results:Steve Simpkin wrote: ↑Tue Jun 13, 2023 11:03 pmThe weight of the HP-32S and HP-42S are from the Museum of HP Calculator’s existing comparison table. HP 32S: 127 g and 4.5 oz vs 5 oz from the MoHPC
HP 32SII: 120 g and 4.1 oz vs 5 oz assumption that the HP 32SII weighs the same as the HP 32s
HP 42S: 142 g and 5.0 oz vs 5 oz from the MoHPC
HP 35s: 143 g and 5.0 oz vs 125 g and 4.4 oz from Wikipedia
So, basically Chumango's values are correct. The values provided by the MoHPC are also correct to within the accuracy of zero decimal places. Had the weight of the HP 32S been 4.4 oz instead of 4.5 oz, it would have rounded down to 4 oz instead of rounding up to 5 oz, and Steve Simpkin's assumption that the HP 32SII weighs the same as the HP 32S would have been much more accurate. As to using info obtained from Wikipedia to estimate the weight of the HP 35s, well, you use info from sketchy sources at your own peril.
