What was wrong with using the middle mouse button when you want a new window/tab?
As I see it, it now just behaves less consistent with no apparent benefit. Is there still a way to open an external link in the same tab?
(Don't get me wrong; it's just a very minor annoyance - just trying to understand your motivation behind this.)

The motivation was the fact that many people have requested this change since the forum was opened.
If you want to go to a link in the same tab you can always right click on the link, copy it and then paste it into the address bar (Ctrl-L then Enter should do it).
