DM41x and QSPI?

Post by ratwolf »

DM41x Program Info says QSPI not in use

Why there is then a section in the DM41x manual about QSPI?

7.5.4. Load QSPI from FAT
Starts flashing of the QSPI firmware. The firmware DM41X_qspi_xxx.bin or DMCP_qspi_xxx.bin is expected to be stored in the FAT filesystem root directory..

QSPI cannot be found in the Firmware section of DM41x

Is QSPI not required for the DM41x?

QSPI is not used in the 41X, but keep in mind the 41X is built on the DMCP platform (same internal h/w as the DM42) which includes the QSPI, which is used in the DM42. So you can simply ignore this on the 41X.

Thank you for the prompt reply.
That was my guess, but better to have it confirmed.

Then with the next revision of the DM41x manual the chapter 7.5.4 should be removed respectively commented accordingly.

Well, no... The features in section 7.5 apply to DMCP, which is somewhat analogous to the BIOS in your PC; it's built-in and available, whether or not you need them when running some particular program; when running DM41X, it isn't necessary, but when a user installs some different program into a DM41X device, for example DM42, then the QSPI loading feature is necessary.

But yes, it can be safely ignored by Dm41X-only users.

This information should be in the manual because it is not fair to the user that he has to waste time trying to find out. Even the search here in the forum fools the user.

Seems to me there is nothing forcing a user to try every single operation described in the manual, so he/she does not have to try at all; further, one should never try an operation if he/she has no idea what the function is for, or it's intended consequences.

Realistically, do you think such a user would bother to go and check the manual prior to trying this?

And if they did, would a note that 41X users should ignore it assuage their curiosity and then react like "oh, OK, I'll just ignore that".

But sure, such a note can be added during the next document update.
