Display update difference between DM41X and HP41

Regarding use of the 82143A features vs. the 82242A IR Module...

The 82143A is well documented due to the huge but still growing base of 41 users at the time (e.g. VASM listings were released NOMAS to the PPC community), while Blinky came near the end of 41 market life, at which point HP was no longer releasing such details, and there were no 3rd-party derivative products that I'm aware of, so it remains essentially undocumented (I/O ports, buffers, etc.).

Moreover, the IR printer was really introduced for the Pioneer and Charlemagne series machines, and at the time, HP reported (at some conference - they all blur these days) that the Blinky module was quite kludged to get it to work, but quite clearly they did so, as mine still works with any HP 82240A/B I've tried it with.

It is not impossible that this will change, but almost so.

My three blinkys are go to modules for my 41Cl v1, v4 & v5 along with the three time modules.

Plugged the IR back into the DM41x also. Scientific calcs should display and capture time and display or print resulting data.

Never understood why the 42s had no clock but the business calcs did.

I never understood this decision either. It was available for Saturn (Lewis) in all the business Pioneers, the 41CX had it, and it's hard to imagine there is any added cost, so why decide to not include it? This was really the only complaint about the 42S I ever had (though I might have complained about the poor contrast LCD if I had today's eyes). Perhaps HP 'de-featured' a clock when they changed the 42S' positioning from the 41's successor to the 15C's successor; it didn't have a clock.

As for firm announcements, I'll bet I can do that before you can assemble one of Meindert's IR receivers (which, IMHO, you should).

In the first place, it is not mine, but Martin Hepperle's work, and I have loads of fun with the HP82240 printer emulator on my PC. And maybe we get a solution to work that does not require the HP IR receiver

... and the R/S works only if you keep it pressed for a few seconds and release it.

I tried on battery mode and USB in FAST and SLOW, same result.

I reported similar symptoms regarding a test program that performs the counting in stack.

I had the same symptoms: Sluggish, halting and jumpish behaviour and very delayed response to the R/S key in stopping execution.

I guess there is an issue there, since I did the test after a complete upgrade to the newest OS and emulator.

My settings
a. Display mode: Switching does not change a thing
b. Modules active: Advantage and Printer (and yes: unplugging printer helps!)
c. Digit display setting: FIX 4
d. Other non-vanilla things: Nope, even resetting the calc has no effects. FAST, SLOW and USB-Power alter nothing

If you have the printer module installed, each time VIEW is executed, it pauses to "PRINT" the X register. Since you don't seem to be actually printing, I suspect you are interpreting the pauses to print as sluggish behavior.

If you'd like to keep the printer module installed, but not print, then Clear Flag 21 (after each power-on) to tell the 41 OS to ignore the printer, and I believe you will not see the delays.

You are certainly right, I did not think that a virtual printer is active on my DM41X virtually at all times.

I should go to experiment a bit with the old hardware.

Might well be that - with Flag 21 set... – a counter program also does not run half as smooth on an HP-41 with a physical Printer attached and powered on.
