New "HP"-15C Collectors Edition
Re: New "HP"-15C Collectors Edition
Thank you very much! I've thought a bit about what I'm going to do with my calculator, and in my opinion dm32 could be better. Next year I'm going to study physics at university, so I need a calculator able to handle advanced mathematics problems. So I'd like to buy the new dm32, but I have a question: how much will it cost according to you? If the price difference between dm42 and dm32 were not so high, I would buy the first one rather than the second one.
DM42, Emu48, Emu71.
Re: New "HP"-15C Collectors Edition
I don't know the price of the new DM32 yet, but please allow me guessing a bit: AFAIK its mechanical hardware (case and keys) will be identical to the DM42, just the prints on the keys and bezel will differ. Electronic hardware will be almost identical, too, except the processor. Software... well, that's only software So the DM32 should cost about the same as the DM42 (and DM41X). That's what I expect, but I still don't know its price yet.fra04 wrote: ↑Sat May 13, 2023 11:00 pmNext year I'm going to study physics at university, so I need a calculator able to handle advanced mathematics problems. Re: New "HP"-15C Collectors Edition
I began college at a 2-year school studying engineering, and at the end of it I bought a high-end programmable calculator, knowing how valuable it would be in my studies. Then I transferred to a four-year college and transferred to physics. Truth: I scarcely ever pulled that calculator out in my physics classes. Now I would've killed for a calculator with a CAS ability--Computer Algebra System--that could've solved integrals for me, but those didn't exist back then. (HP Prime or TI-Nspire CX II CAS or some such.) Shoot, desktop computers were only just coming out then, the IBM XT and AT, and the MacIntosh, the Commodore 64, etc.
In engineering, I calculated a lot and I programmed a lot. In physics, it was a different kind of math: we worked with symbols, and rarely, if ever, wanted a numeric answer--and when we did, all we really cared about was the exponent, which you compute by adding and subtracting. We'd solve matrices at times, but again we took pains to choose our coordinate systems and make simplifying assumptions so that the math was easy.
Now I know a lot has changed, and it could be that numeric calculation is now a bigger portion of the physics curriculum, but it's just something to consider . . .
That said, I do think having a capable, programmable calculator is great choice for new science students: learn it before you go to school and it'll always be there when you need it! And many students change their study major in the first year or two, so who knows.

I pretty much agree with Walter's and Bill's replies. I don't expect the DM32 being significantly cheaper than the DM42, so the DM42 will be better for you if you really are interested in RPN and programming, IMHO. On the other hand I don't believe you'd need a mighty calculator for university physics (or maths or computer science) - actually any calculator at all - but I'd suggest to ask current students to be sure. Then the DM15L or HP-15c CC might be a plenty adequate but much cheaper option for you, each with its own advantages.fra04 wrote: ↑Sat May 13, 2023 11:00 pmThank you very much! The cost has been known since yesterday, it's CHF 249. It's actually more expensive than the DM42.fra04 wrote: ↑Sat May 13, 2023 11:00 pmThank you very much! And the justification for the higher price, the changes to the hardware.
At some point, the DM42 and DM41X will probably be migrated to the new hardware, with a price change.

Re: New "HP"-15C Collectors Edition
Undoubtedly. Personally, I'm rather indifferent, a DM32 hasn't been on my wishlist. I just tried to answer fra04's question if it's worth waiting for the DM32 in hope of a cheaper price tag when compared to the DM42, if I may rephrase his question.

There seems to be an unlimited confidence in automatic translations in that country where most people never learn any foreign language. Observed already in 1999 - and had a good laugh. But on 'professional' packages it's just painful nowadays.

It's so easy though. Even a Frenchman knows that: »zientivik kalkülator«.
