Actually, it's not possible to do separate press/release on a trackpad, it seems. If I try to hold down a single tap, it does nothing at all.

A normal press-hold is done with a three-finger tap.

Let me know if you want me to test further, thanks!

And I think there may be the problem.

Before I spend further time on this I would like your beg, borrow or otherwise obtain a mouse-like-creature with a controllable press and release, for your computer, so we can determine the source of the problem. My fingerpadthing in my MBP mechanically clicks and thus we have a Press and Release.

Sorry Jaco, I was talking nonsense; it's been a long day.

Using the Apple Magic Trackpad, it is possible to do a regular single click hold, and then release. You just have to press harder and physically click/hold the trackpad (which does not have separate physical buttons). If I do that, I find that things now work properly: ARCSIN is executed as expected. That's real progress, thank you for making me find that.

What isn't working is the "light tap", which MacOS calls "tap to click". I have always had that enabled. It is this that produces the errant behaviour I described.

My opinion is that this ought to work, too: "tap to click" is supposed to behave exactly as a full hard-press click (i.e. a mouse button click) does. Indeed, it does so in every single other application I have tried, over many years. and it works fine in C47 in most cases too, except following f/g.

But I appreciate you may not agree :)

I would be very happy to continue debugging why it doesn't work only in a small part of C47, if you were willing to?

anyway, progress, thanks.

Glad you could find a way. Yes it maybe is supposed to work. But I do not have the time to fault find this especially since there is a setting you can make to proceed.

It clearly is a timing thing: the OS probably simulates a press/release delay faster that the GTK process allows it. Maybe it is the processor that is too slow for what is needed. Maybe we can find a way to latch it internally our side. I don’t know how to tell GTK to react faster, and I don’t know how to tell the OS to space out the click simulation.

I’d rather you use the hard click when you want to play with the sim. Or try find a setting on macOS to slow down the tap to click simulation.

Understood Jaco, no problem.

Thanks very much indeed for all your help with this, and I do now have a usable simulator :)

Given stupid Brexit, the price of a new DM42 is now prohibitive, here in the UK, so the sim may have to do for a while, too.

thanks again.

Are you sure about Brexit being the cause? Switzerland isn't in EU either. We in the EU pay customs and VAT on import from Switzerland as well, specifically in my country it's 21%.

Yes, that was my point: before leaving the EU, I didn't have to pay taxes on SM calculators.

If you mean you pay those taxes too, but don't find it prohibitive, you are just richer than me :)

I believe that you as well as me have always been obliged to pay VAT and customs for SM and Brexit doesn’t change anything. Some time one gets lucky and the package goes through without being charged. I payed extra for my 41X but no for the 42. This year I received two packages from the US (the same case as Switzerland) and was charged for just one, the cheaper of them…

oh! so sorry, I completely missed your point, being that SM calcs are not posted from the EU? Yes, good point, which I had forgotten. I need more coffee.

However, looking at the prices recently, they did seem higher than I remembered. But that could be my memory :)

There was a price increase in calculators just two days after I ordered mine.
And as for taxes, they exist to protect the workers in your country. Believe me, the situation is much worse in France, and much better in Switzerland which is not part of the European "union".
