An Exacto knife should be available in hobby stores, or possibly even Staples, an office supply store.

These are very sharp, and have a barrel like a pen, so should be controllable.

Any overlay thicker than 0.3 mm will hardly fit in the slots provided.
Which slots are you refering to Walter? There's no slots in my DM42, as the ones there were in the bottom of my HP-41CV.
I do not intend to replace the existing plate with the paper one I just made. I simply lay it on top of the calculator. Not very elegant, but sufficient for testiong ;-)
Look at the sides, or pass a fingernail through the internal border, did you find the slots now?

Uh - I put my glasses on and found them in the sides, how embarrassing
(I was only looking at the bottom, same place as the HP-41 slots)

Right, but overlays' slots were moved on the sides on the 48 already.
Why embarrassing? Those are not prominently highlighted.

Maybe someone should design/build/sell "punching molds"

1 for each key size...
Or just one for the smallest size and we would punch more than once the largest key holes...
Sincèrement, Sincerely, 73,

There definitely are slots along both sides, but they are quite thin and close to the bezel plane. Look at the sides with a magnifier and possibly a flashlight.

Yes - they’re tiny. It looked thrice with my reading glasses and failed to see them. It wasn’t until I wore my extra strong reading glasses and used a very bright light I saw them 👓 🔭 🔦 🤓

Talking about overengineering, I just ordered a laser module for mounting on an old 3D printer that I don't use anymore. :)

I do not use the 6 little tabs on the sides - they are way too flimsy and way too thin for practical use in my opinion of course.

I use photo paper from the printing lab (Fuji Frontier). I use thin double sided TESA tape from RS-Components.
