Custom costs when ordering a calculator

Post by johanw »

I got a mail from PostNL (the Dutch postal service) that my calculator was delivered but I had to pay € 8,06 custom costs. When I checked their website I saw a note that this already had been paid. Not by me as far as I know, unless it was included in the total bill from SM.

I'm at work now so I will see this evening if my calculator is really delivered, but I am curious if someone else has had this before. The VAT was calculated over the stated value of € 19,32 so that number was accepted. Did some custom rules change when importing something in the EU?

Edit: the DM16 I ordered was indeed in my mailbox and seems to work OK.

You paid 42% tax/duty? Or was that 20% plus a handling fee?

I received both DM42 and DM41X without any tax/duty here in UK.

Yeah, the DM16L looks like a nice li'l critter.

It was 21% plus a handling fee of EUR 4. However, when I checked the site it said the bill had been paid and there was no mention of a fee attached to the box in my mailbox so I won't do anything unless some customs officer comes demanding a fee.

Odd, I got a mail with a reminder for the costs, it stated that my package would not be delivered otherwise but I already have it. The track and trace code matches the one printed on the package so I assume it's no cheat.

Probably should pay it... While the postal delivery arm makes frequent mistakes, the customs collection arm rarely gives-up and decides to let you off, just to be nice.

Clearly the notification that you received by mail did not know that you had already made the payment. Often times accounts are not updated for weeks, resulting in bills for already paid items. This happens everywhere, here in the USA and over there wherever it is that you live. Usually the notice will say something like "If you have already made a payment, disregard this notice." This happens to me all the time, I'll pay a doctor's bill online, and then weeks later receive a paper invoice in the mail. In your case, it appears that someone else paid the fee, and somehow this fact was not conveyed to the custom's office billing department.

Shouldn't they look like 2022-04-07 (YYYY-MM-DD) then?
