I believe HPMike's package arrived in US within a day of mine arriving here, I can imagine no reason for PostNL to just sit on it for a few days, but coming into Chicago, it took a few days longer to be processed by Customs and ISC. This is typical, though I'm not aware why entry at Chicago takes longer than NY, perhaps because they receive a larger volume of parcels than NY does? As I live in NY most of my parcels from Europe and UK do enter US via NY, but a few occasionally enter in Chicago, and these always are processed a bit slower than NY. But all of this low-level detail is impossible to see, as USPS tracking has no visibility of a parcel entering the country until it reaches ISC.

Anyhow, about 3 weeks does seem to be typical these days; indeed this is slower than it was, but the cause is the change in EU postal regulations which occurred in July 2021, requiring 100% parcel assessment for custom duties and taxes, and the ripple effects on postal system throughout Europe. The good news is at least we can all track these shipments ourselves, even if the tracking tools are not as revealing as we would like.

This sounds like the average customer prefers a slow parcel (signalling its location sometimes) over a quicker parcel arriving unexpected(ly) in his mailbox, doesn't it? Exaggerating surprise protection is possible.

(Or are there any parcel-eating monsters on the way? Sea serpents? The massive black hole in the center of customs? The world is full of riddles...)

You've got the order backwards. Processing through the ISC simply means that the item has been received from the overseas carrier in the USA and handed over to Customs. It does NOT mean that it has been processed by Customs, which has yet to occur. Once Customs has completed its inspection, the item is transferred to a USPS Regional Distribution Center, which then sends it on its way to its destination within the USA. So, bottom line, I still believe that my package arrived in the USA six days after yours, and was due to different transit times from Switzerland to the USA.

As to PostNL not shipping it at the same time as your package, their Processing Center in the Netherlands may not have received it at the same time as yours. Remember, Michael S. shipped our packages from Switzerland, not the Netherlands. Or perhaps they went to different PostNL Sorting Centers. Either way, shipping is now taking a lot longer using PostNL than it did with Swiss Post, just so we can feel all warm and fuzzy with a tracking number.

You're right, I wrote that backwards, but since Customs remains invisible it's somewhat moot. We;ll never know when it shipped and arrived, but I do know that Chicago typically processes slower than NY, at least for my parcels.

As for PostNL, that was the best option available, without going to a dramatically more expensive service such as DHL. Swiss Post is not an option, they will no longer handle such parcels, because of the EU changes I mentioned above. PostNL was not selected specifically because they offer tracking, that's juts a nice side-effect, which lets customers self-service to find status.

FWIW, the package arrived today, five days after arriving in the USA and 28 days after it shipped from Switzerland. It was listed as registered mail, however, the postal carrier delivered it in my mail slot w/o requesting a signature while stating on the tracking record that it had been "left with individual." So, all is well that ends well, and I guess going forward that I just need to expect future items from SM to take a long time to arrive.

In my case, I did get the pandemic version of registered mail delivery, but the tracking status still looks pretty much identical to the package that never arrived.

And I suppose there's merit to that consistency, because the package that "never arrived" actually just arrived. 104 days afters being shipped. That will teach me to be hasty.

Shipment from Switzerland via PostNL Packet Registered is still very slow. ;)
Maybe "shipment" meens in this case transport via ship, ( 4 days from Switzerland to NL),
and the water levels in the rivers crossing the countries seems to be low? 8-)
Also the "cool down phase" e.g. at the transit hub (again 4 days) is remarkable.
I can't wait to see what exciting things happen now.

Could it be somebody trying to create a demand for premium (priced) express shipment options?
What is the metric tensor in imperial units?

Please leave PostNL and return to Swisspost!
At least for those who do not need a tracking number.
It's unbearable to wait two weeks or more for a 300km trip.
Even if it becomes a 1800km travel to Netherlands and back!
