I admit I came across (Jacobi) elliptic functions and integrals (1st, 2nd, and 3rd kind) just a few days ago - they never occurred to me in my entire professional life as a physicist. Anybody has an idea about applications beyond pure mathematics and computing ellipses? (Yes, I know astronomy is full of ellipses.)
I've found this https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elliptisc ... sbeispiele and https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacobisch ... der_Physik in German Wikipedia - the English edition seems being quite silent in this matter. To me, these examples look a bit like stuff noone ever computes in real life. But maybe I missed some important points.

Looking at the links at the bottom of the Wikipedia gives the following link which provides some real world applications:

Re: Elliptic stuff
Thanks and merci! You pointed me to some sites I had missed so far. Original articles of 1850 deserve a thorough read.

Walter,
Assume you’ve found the following:
1 - from the Cornell University Library: Historical Mathematics Monographs collection:
https://www.gutenberg.org/files/31076/31076-pdf.pdf
Baker, A.L. (2010), Elliptic Functions - An Elementary Text-Book for Students of Mathematics
2 - HP41 program on same:
https://www.hpmuseum.org/software/41/41jacob.htm
Hope this helps - hopefully less dense than the original texts!
Cheers

Re: Elliptic stuff
Thanks but I must not access the first link from Germany (access to project Gutenberg blocked due to some legal issue).
