They allowed a calculator in a Linear Algebra exam??
Yes. I could use them in all written exams. In oral exams it depended on the prof, but usually it was not necessary or useful because most of the time you didn't need to make precise calculations there anyway.

I studies from 1988 to 1993, so that was when graphical machines just entered the market. My FX-8000 was often forbidden, my brother had a FX-4000P which was also programmable but he said it was never a problem to use it (he did computer science at the same university).

Huh. All the math classes I attended (for me going for physics, it was Linear Algebra, and a choice between what was called Analysis or "Higher Math", the latter being the 'dumbed down' course for engineers, or lazy physicists, from the math's department POV) did not allow or used a calculator, at all. It wouldn't have helped you anyway, unless you had a CAS, which was just started to come into being in a portable device at the time.

Same for the Theoretical Physics courses. Calculators were for the experimentalists.

Have we heard anything more about the product release? I watched the YouTube video but it didn’t make a lot of sense to me.

According to well-informed source the release announcement is just round the corner. It will definitely surprise most of you - the new model is DM 88X, a remake of the venerable TI-88. Unless it get canceled at the last moment...

Wait. Let me check the date again...Nope, it's not April 1st. Why would anyone remake that old thing (with algebraic logic, no less!) I can think of two reasons not to make it.
  • It's not nostalgic for anyone since it was never sold.
It isn't very powerful compared to what we already have.
Of course 2 wouldn't be valid if 1 wasn't true since us fans of old calculators don't care about the fact that our collections aren't as capable as what's available today. To us, the old machines such as the TI-59, Sinclair Cambridge Programmable and the Casio Pro fx-1 have a soul that's missing from today's crop. That's why I was hoping for a 100% functional clone of the HP-41CX including all the expandability but made with modern parts and construction techniques. The method of holding connections together using the case halves seems ridiculous to me and it hasn't really held up well over time.
A couple good candidates for remake might be the HP-65 and -67, though they'd only be worth it if they included mag card readers.
I wouldn't expect SM to make them, though, since they're after a different market than us nostalgia buffs/collectors.

Of course I was joking, sorry if it sounded real...
