MANUALS?

Congratulate me, I snarfed a good condition HP-32SII manual off "the bay" for under $10 with tax+shipping. I see there are currently three available for under $20; the rest are $30 or more. It will be nice to have a printed manual when I get the SM32 on my desk. Now SwissMicros just has to make the calculator!

To my knowledge...
- Open source is working (Free42/Dm42 and WPxx calculators are an example) especially once the first released is finished by the original authors
- but Open source can lead also to uncontrollable "derivations" with a risk on the "image" (reputation?) of the original intent
- but Open Source has also a "NoDerivatives" option that is aka of you can look, test and prototype, but all "derivations" must comme from SwissMicros or be approved by SwissMicros (NoDerivatives = If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you may not distribute the modified material).

I think that in the case of SwissMicros a Open source licence with "NoDerivative" can increase greatly bug correction, and bring new additions and enhancements that are endorsed by SwissMicros, maintain a control on the image of what is released and still make money on the hardware...

BTW... SwissMicros can release only some parts of the software, generally the Calculator part and not the OS part, as Open Source and keep the "internals" protected as in DM42 and reduce the risk of finding clones on the market...

SwissMicros does not limit what other developers do with the DM42 code once it's released. In fact, at least 2 different members of this Forum make their own versions of DM42 f/w, with a few preferences and features adjusted to their taste. These builds are announced here in the Forum and many other end-users have reported using them and liking these derived versions. SwissMicros simply asked that such versions be clearly identified as coming from alternate sources, and not from SwissMicros, and that support issues should be directed back to the derivative authors.

This has worked very well IMHO, and is good all around, as this enables alternate versions to be made available to the community, while maintaining appropriate responsibilities and attribution.

@bob... I think that we are all speeking of Open source (and me restricting it to NoDerivatives)...
... for DM32 😜

1) I exclude all the emulated Calculators = DM41X and Voyagers series for obvious reasons
2) as for DM42 "derivative" possibilities... it is not a Swissmicros call, but a Thomas Okken one (SwissMicros inherited the "derivaitve allowed" licence from Free42) !

Has a pre-order date been mentioned or hinted at?

I would participate in a pre-order!

And I’m curious if we’re days, weeks, months, or years away from the release. I’m still hopeful for this year…

Thanks, Bob! That’s not too bad. We’re still seeing some 1 year delivery quotes for some electronics parts. 😿

I was already thinking that, but great thanks! Even if it does not hold at least I know that being on the lookout for this need not be on the top of my priority list before the new year.

Just checking in to see if there’s any news on the new machine.

We’re still seeing parts shortages at work but occasionally there’s some relief. I’m seeing anecdotal evidence that the retail business is having some issues with oversupply in some cases due to surges in the supply chain.
