Why not a DM17BII?

General discussion about calculators, SwissMicros or otherwise

How about a DM17BII?

Great idea, I want to have one!

Why bother? There are enough choices already.

Because it would be much more expensive than a second hand hp17bii that you can grab for a dozen bucks.

I have two of those already, plus a full manual set; they go (or used to go?) cheap indeed.

Cons:
- no import / export / save & load state / ...
- not a great display
- solver is great but slow

Thomas Okken is working on adding the Pioneer Solver to a new (likely not free, but certainly worth it) version of Free42. If only in the paid version, this feature sadly very likely will not make its way into the DM42, but I assume it will be available in the other current platforms (iOS, Android, Win, Mac).

Does the solver in the iOS 17BII simulator product produce identical results for all the examples in the excellent HP book "HP 27S HP 19B Technical Applications" ?

From memory, yes (but that is some time ago). If you specifically mean whether the simulator implements the L(), G(), and variable recall of the original HP 17Bii solver, and not of the later "Plus", then yes ... the simulator implements the former (correct) ones, despite the likeliness of the skin with the later "Plus" calculator.

Always strange that HP called it a "Plus", when it's actually a "Minus" ;)

From a post by Don Shepherd on the hpmuseum.org forum:
A=0xsigma(I:1:10:1:L(S:S+I))

Enter the formula into the solver, press CALC, do a Clear Data (to insure S is 0), press A softkey, it will (correctly) say that A=0, then press RCL S, it will show S=110. The correct answer is (or should be) S=55, which is what you get if you run it on the 17bii.
The original 17Bii gives S=55 indeed (as it should be, just tested, confirmed by Don on the 19B as well).
The silver "Plus" gives the wrong answer indeed (just tested on my "Plus").
The iOS app gives the correct answer (S=55) as well (just tested as well on my phone).

Is there a summary anywhere of the capabilities of the various Solvers?

Włodek's excellent Guide covers it a little, but doesn't detail, e.g. 17BII vs 32SII vs 42S etc.

Not that I know of. There are some articles online about the HP 27S and 19B (and 17Bii) solver, and there is also enough to find about the traditional RPN solvers (like in the 15C and the 42S). But I don't know about a comparison between the two. Also hard to do, probably, because the idea behind those solvers is very different.
