FORUM ANNOUNCEMENT

Post by grsbanks »

Just so that everyone is aware, we're temporarily pulling the plug on this forum on Monday morning Nov. 16th at 09:00 UTC.

This is to facilitate moving the forum to a bigger and better server and to avoid loss of posts while this is happening.

Estimated down-time is a couple of hours and things should be up and running normally again by 12:00 UTC the same day at the latest.

I think "FORUM ANNOUNCEMENT" should be placed one level higher in this forum.

So do I but I don't get to choose where global announcements go except getting them published in all fora, not just in the one where the post is placed.

Perhaps you could put it as a sub-forum in "General discussion" where we have one entry only so far which is "Discuss". Thus you'd have two items under "General Discussion" : "Discuss" and "Forum Announcement". This way it'd have visibility at the top level.

Hmm, moving server (host?) and only 2-3 hours downtime? Wow.
For me it took 3 days d.t the response time for my "old" host to hand me the Auth-ID and transfer of nameservers (which I did myself). Plus exporting, moving and importing the 1GB+ database.
But then again, if you own all servers yourself, it would be quicker of course. Also, I guess the database here is not that large as mine is since my board has run since 2005 and has significantly more posts and members.

Also, it's not clear which version you are running, but the latest version 3.3.2 should be considered be done in the same move. It's easily upgraded if this board version is 3.2.x or newer.
Beware though, v3.3.x is not compatible with php version below 7.2.

Best of luck, and I'll see you on the other side :)

I'm going to guess that the new forum server is up and running already, has been thoroughly tested, and that there has been at least one dry run of the process for transferring the database contents from the current server to the new one as well. With that kind of preparation, two to three hours for the final cutover is quite realistic, and no one is sweating bullets during the process

Configuring a whole new server, transferring the forum, and testing it, all in 2-3 hours, that would be very impressive, but not in a good way. :D
