... I was thinking of something much more sophisticated, possibly exotic, made of lizard or ostrich leather, in different colours, without a belt loop, but with a flap that completely closes the case. That's certainly not cheap, it would be as elaborately manufactured as a wallet, but it would be a worthy cover for expensive pocket calculators like those from SwissMicros. :)
Yes I'm thinking of a design similar to what Bob posted with a leather flap closure that slips between the main case and a band transverse across the case (there's probably a leatherworking or bag design term for this outside my vocabulary). I'm thinking of black and brown options with thin, full-grain, textured leather. Something like ostrich, lizard, bison (which may be too thick), alligator/crocodile, or faux texture pressed onto some other high-quality bovine or horsehide leather. I like the textured options that come in shell cordovan from Horween in Chicago. I think this should definitely be full-grain for longevity but also very thin pieces to maintain the classy, exotic feel.

Edited to add: The texture of the leatherette case that comes with the DM42 is not bad, it's just that it's pressed into vinyl and not real leather. Also, would people be interested in a lining like on the existing leatherette case, or would you be okay with an unlined interior?

I like your plans, they sound much like the original HP cases but with more exotic types of leather.

I prefer to have a ling, as this will minimize wear on the metal bezels and even (non dual-shot) key tops. The very purpose of the case is to help avoid that, no need to have the case contribute to it. Of course that adds a bit to the cost. Well worth it in my book.

For sizing, I realize your aim is the Swiss Micros DM machines, but are you also sizing thickness for Pioneers as well?

Keep going!

In any case, the leather case should have an inner lining made of artificial silk, just as it's used for expensive wallets. In the case of leather, calfskin in particular has proven to be suitable, as it is cost-effective and not too stiff in processing. It's also offered with different textures and colours. In the end, the choice always remains a matter of taste. :)

If they use calfskin, who's gonna eat all that veal? Not me! I'm half Italian and half German but I must be one of the few of either country who doesn't like veal! Scuttle the Scallopini! Waste the Wiener Schnitzel!

Well luckily for the baby bovines, SwissMicros isn’t yet a household name. Also, the vegans will always have their dead dinosaur and ancient algae option ;)

If there’s enough interest, I could be talked into doing Voyager and Pioneer versions too. The Voyager ones would at least apply to SM because I think they have the same dimensions. I might get booted from the forum if I pursue the Pioneer sizes too aggressively ;)
