WP34S overlay and cable

Post by amafan »

I Acquired a brand new in package HP30B and I'm thinking about converting it to a WP34S. Is there still a source for the overlay and cable needed to flash the 34S firmware?

The overlay used to be available from commerce.hpcalc.org.

I asked on the hpmuseum site for help with flashing, and got some kind responses.

I think that you can still order overlays from :
https://commerce.hpcalc.org/overlay.php

But concerning the flashing cables, it’s very hard to find one. When they appear on some site, they end up at a high price. But you can build your own cable using pogo pins.

I checked that site and they are not taking new overlay orders because their supplies had dried up because of CoVID.

I still have some (limited supply) vinyl sticker overlays left. See the links below to the Windows simulator graphics files which correspond with the overlay variations I have. At least those that I still have left are listed, not all the combinations I had.

I have:

Gloss: WP34C eRPN: More than 10 sets left: WP34C above key with ERPN

Matte: WP34C eRPN: 5 sets left: WP34C above key with ERPN

Matte: WP34S: 4 sets left: WP34S above key labels

The eRPN stickers can be used for both eRPN and non-eRPN versions as there are 2x title labels. Both WP34C variations however have in the space below the 0 "ENTRY RPN" which you may or may not like. The WP34S has none of the kind.

AFAIK, there is a guy in Germany printing the official overlays. I'll look up his address - just give me some time, please.

EDIT: He's called Werner Hopf (WernerHopf 'at' t-online 'dot' de) and prints for 3 € per overlay (or maybe per 2 overlays?) plus shipping. He can print WP 34S and WP 31S overlays. His PayPal address: kiwiesser 'at' gmx 'dot' de

Original flashing cables are available at that auction site only. In the manual, however, several alternatives are shown and explained.

I thank you for replying to my question. I have a WP34S that I bought on Ebay. It seems to work well. I have a 30B that I am considering to reflash and do the Timer and IR mods. I will decide whether to do that when I get the necessary understanding of the procedure and materials to do the job.

You don't need a special cable to flash. You can make an adapter from a piece of 2.54mm header and a couple of resistors. This will allow you to use a standard USB to serial adapter to flash.

The pads are on a 2mm pitch, so standard 2.54mm (0.1") header won't fit.
