Don't forget it was a revolution of the American colonies against the British. So they kept the British weights and measures to become distinct. Quite logical...

And nowadays - splendid isolation. And a source of calculator functions noone else needs.

Since this topic popped up elsewhere: we've decided by votes of the developers. Result: we follow NIST in this matter. Case settled.
