I concur fullheartedly. Thus, when it comes to international measuring standards and national standard institutes, common engineers should become very careful.ijabbott wrote: ↑Wed Jun 24, 2020 11:55 pmAnd c is now fixed to an exact value by definition of the SI base units, so there is no longer any room for uncertainty.

Unfortunately, not where I live. Thank you. Thomas Jefferson.

Re: Torr and mmHg ??
In fairness to the United States, it should be recognized that it is a lot easier to adopt a standard where there wasn't one before, than it is to replace an existing standard with a new one. The Imperial Units were well-established long before the metric system was introduced, and switching to metric now would create an enormous amount of hassle. As much as I find the metric system superior, I really can't fault the people of my second home country for sticking with what they have.

Re: Torr and mmHg ??
No flames. With all the tools, etc. It would be hard to switch now. But, at least lables include both. Some roads have dual speed limits.
Cars can be mixed systems. So a mechanic may need both sets of tools.
But if it were done when Jefferson was President, there would have been a lot less things to change.

According to this, he was interested in doing so, but it must not have been a very high priority:

And this is what we are still using nowadays here, in Italy.

Re: Torr and mmHg ??
I don't think Italy is full of millions of houses that were built out of lumber cut to Roman-era units.

But we, and the rest of the world too, did use old units until embracing the new ones.Thomas Okken wrote: ↑Sat Jun 27, 2020 4:30 pmI don't think Italy is full of millions of houses that were built out of lumber cut to Roman-era units.

Nobody was harmed in the process, maybe confused at most.

Re: Torr and mmHg ??
Sure, back in the days before everything was built out of standard-sized parts.
But hey, if you really want to believe in a narrative, you'll do it no matter what, so never mind...

Yep, the good ol 'back in the days'...
So nothing can ever change anymore.
But hey, if you really want to live in autarchy in a closed system, good for you: the rest of the world is going elsewhere.
