But: grsbanks said the IR protocol is implemented in the DMCP OS, which is used by the DM42 as well as the DM41X.
So I don't see how a DM41X ROM would help here.
I think you are right, I was looking for the IR printer rom file but there is no such a thing, its integrated in the OS.

You could use the DM41X and make your own printer rom instead of the included one with different IR commands.
I guess that would do what you want. For the DM42 I don't know a solution.
How do I use the 41X to create a rom?
Many years of study and toil... :D

It actually is possible to create an MCODE ROM image within the 41X using upper page RAM and some of the tools such as HEPAX or ZENROM, but most folks learning to write MCODE would use the 41 SDK available at HP41.org.

Answering more specifically how you go about doing it is beyond the scope of a forum discussion.

I see. So I guess I will have to wait for the DM41X to be released fully(idk how to get my hands on a beta). I also see that you have one of the beta models. How is it compared to the DM-42? Would it be worth to buy for the same price as the DM-42?

BETA units of the DM41X are still available from this special order page:

https://www.swissmicros.com/order.php?special=dm41x

The DM41X is quite different from the DM42 in the same ways that an HP-41 was quite different than an HP-42. Of course there are great similarities as well, with a nearly identical programming language, etc. So which is best depends on your needs and preferences. If extreme precision is needed and you focus on purely 'number crunching' then the DM42 is probably a better choice, while the DM41X would be better if you are interested in exploring the hundreds of application ROM modules produced by HP and 3rd-parties for the 41 series between 1979 and 1990, as well as some more modern applications such as complex number functions, matrices, continued fractions, statistics, and even some 'best features of classic ROM' collections.

Of course, the only really sane decision is to get both, in order to have the best-in-class tools for whatever you may want to calculate at a given time.

I have been told just the opposite by family members. :?
But, I did it anyway!

You made the right choice!

And I've found that involving family members when making decisions about acquiring calculators to be a strategic limitation. Use your instincts and act. It's what the rest of us do... :D

Words of wisdom.
I don't know why, but I am currently trying to buy yet another HP 41C...

Hardly, mine is in Italy. Last one came in last week. I should stop one day (or another).
