Use the IR of DM42(or any HP calculator) for commercial IR?

Post by Nazar »

Hi guys, these days IR printers are used seldomly so for me, the IR printing feature is not really useful. I wanted to know the pattern of the IR code sent by the calculator so I could try to replicate the code sent by i.e an AC remote and if it can even be used for this purpose or they use a different protocol altogether. If the latter is the case then I will try to modify the Free42/DMCP code to work with the commercial IR protocol. Help and tips would be greatly appreciated.

The DM42 transmits Red Eye protocol.

You won't be able to alter that behaviour because it's in the proprietary operating system DMCP, not in Free42.

Ah, I see. I guess I will have to build my own version of DMCP from Free42 and work on that to use IR.*sigh*

Replicating 3 years of work and creating a new operating system just to get the DM42 to behave as a remote control seems like a lot of effort to me!

It would be a lot of work indeed but I wouldn't go to the full length of replicating that much work and just add this feature on a small usable OS(four function calc) and when I want the full functionality I can just flash in the DMCP OS in.

You could use the DM41X and make your own printer rom instead of the included one with different IR commands.
I guess that would do what you want. For the DM42 I don't know a solution.

Why would I not be able to create this ROM for the DM42?

How do I use the 41X to create a rom?

The DM42 has no roms you can plug in.
The Dm41X has pluggable roms in software like the original Hp41 has them in hardware, some are included and others make these roms themselves,
I don't know how to do that but it may be a solution if it is possible to make a rom to drive IR, you have to do it outside the DM41X.

But: grsbanks said the IR protocol is implemented in the DMCP OS, which is used by the DM42 as well as the DM41X.
So I don't see how a DM41X ROM would help here.
