I do not like these suggestions: #BA, #SI, #SH, SHI, SIN, RAD, 16C, BCO, BAC, BCA, BAC, NUS, NUC, HEX, #RX, #NU
I do not like TLA's for labels.
Cannot be used: RDX.

I got a few votes for no change, i.e. keep BASE, but it is too long.

I tried the following tries on the simulator quickly and it does not work for mostly reasons that the meaning does not jump at you:

Dani suggested: CRD (cardinal number)
Dani suggested: NUC (Number conversion)
Dani suggested: NSY (Numeral Systems)
Dani suggested: CNV (Convert) : Too close to CONV on f[5]. Also tried CVT.
Dani suggested: NCO (Number convert)

The following ones still in the running (sequence of my preference except BIN which is on ice)?
  • #B : RAPo, I added. (Base). This one is even shorter. It could work because # is strong (reference to # on g[1/x]) and B is strong as Base is clear in the context. Compare (CC / CPX) or (COMPLEX / CPX).
  • #BS : RAPo, I added. (Base). I quite like it! It makes the connection to # on g[1/x]. Dropped to 2nd due to another connection in English.
  • NUM : H2X suggested. (Numeral Systems): Could work.
  • #NB : Jaco added. (Number base)
  • BIN : Jaco suggested. We discussed and placed on ice (for now).

Comments?

If you follow the link from H2X
"'Radix' is a Latin word for 'root'.' Root' can be considered a synonym for 'base', in the arithmetical sense."

All roads lead to 'base'.

But there are two more interesting expressions, 'digital numeral systems' (DNS) and 'positional numeral system' (PNS), only that this is also mentioned here. PNS has something for itself, but one would have to use something in marketing that this term can assert itself.

I do not want to use something where a person must think what does it mean, like DNS already means something in internet, and PNS is not known. I think "root" is too far off to have a connection to number base, and also to be confused with the radical symbol. Also, a Radix abbreviation would have been ok, but is used already. Also, I checked that my #B is already in use in the BITS menu to count set bits in a word, a 16C function. I do not want to use the same name.

I want to return to something to do with BASE, I would like B (as you said, all roads lead to base). And I am sure I want to use the strength of the "#" (g[1/x]) connection to integer entry, which all users MUST know. Then there is only one letter changing, so the relevant combinations remaining as choices are:

#BA (BAse)
#BN (Base Number)
#BS (BaSe)
#B# (Base number)
#BM (Base Menu)
#NB (Number Base) not discarded yet, but it is a better know abbreviation of 'Nota bene' and that menu is not more important than its neighbours.

NUM and BIN have not been excluded yet.

Excluded:
#BS (Base) discarded due to 'BS'.
#RX (Radix) discarded due to "Rx = Receiver or receive".

Could we have discussion of the best fit options above?

Of the most recent 'final candidates' immediately above, for me BIN and #BA are best, with a preference for BIN.

Meanwhile, MODE is sitting as still as possible in the boat...

It is true.

I have eyeballed him sitting still in the corner of some foreign field, but I realised MOD and MDE just doesn’t do it as well. Maybe he is sitting still knowing he used to be MODES and was already chopped like REGS.V, FLAGS.V, CATALOG, and maybe more.

In their final development cycle 43S tried to make DISP > DSP but it just came back to DISP a few days after. A few labels like MODE, DISP, SHOW cannot be shorter. FLAGS was looking for trouble... but I cannot, FLAG or FLG just doesn’t work.

FYI, DISP was thought to need shorting but that turned out not being required.

And # is known as 'number sign' in some languages, so I would dump #B# and #BN for reading like overkill.
WP43 SN00000, 34S, and 31S for obvious reasons; HP-35, 45, ..., 35S, 15CE, DM16L S/N# 00093, DM42β SN:00041

I struggle reading BIN without thinking binary, which I think is too narrow (much more going on) as well as misleading (where are the binary functions?) for this purpose.

Am I alone?

PS: This is a yes/no question... :D
