English can be a confusing language, even for those that grew up with it.

Native speakers sometimes use imagery, simile and metaphor to convey meaning. It's understood by the native speakers although people who don't speak that language natively will probably not get the reference. British English speakers sometimes don't understand American examples of this and vice-versa. Also, Cockney rhyming slang takes it to a whole new level! My German Grandmother used to be constantly baffled by American phrases since she translated everything mechanically in her head.
