They would make Free42 operating more RPL-like and I'm uncertain whether this is an advantage or the opposite.
RPL is a beautiful design in and of itself (its tendency to lead to write-only stackrobatics notwithstanding), but it doesn't mix well with the HP-42S design, in my opinion. I was never a big fan of the unlimited-stack patch in Byron Foster's Free42 adaptation. The patch was well done, but the result was just not a 42S any more, again, in my opinion. And of course a big stack breaks many HP-42S programs, and I and many Free42 users value that compatibility.

Which isn't to say that Free42 couldn't be enhanced in other useful ways, like directories, local variables, unlimited RTN stack, etc. But those could all be done without breaking the existing design or HP-42S compatibility.

AFAIK, both wishes would affect Free42. They would make Free42 operating more RPL-like and I'm uncertain whether this is an advantage or the opposite.
Yes, that is the point… with those options it’s more an RPL calculator, for guys like me accustomed to use RPL.
Anyway, it’s a question of time to get used to a new system. After several months using the DM42 I feel comfortable with RPN.

Just for curiosity: What do you want to do with >10 (e.g. 12) registers on the stack?
Maybe it’s a weird way to work, but I used the stack as a register on sequential calculations/problems (like printing calculators) … for example:
  • Total power DB1: N1
    Total power DB2: N2
    .
    .
    Total power DB15: N15
  • Total power of the plant: Sum of powers of DB.
With the DM42 I didn’t have another option that change my way of work.

Probably it’s the best option to avoid confusions and mistakes… not to change the basic behavior and principles of the 42s and, when it can be possible, develop a new RPL machine (DM48 or similar).

Greatings.

That's weird indeed. How about pressing [+] a little earlier? ;)

So, are the DM48s available for pre-order yet?

It's not a question of interest I think... in other thread Michael wrote:

The ROM for the 48 is freely available from HP for personal use only. Not for commercial use.
And there is no simulator yet for the HP-48 similar to Free42.
Otherwise we would be happy to make a clone of it 8-)

well then SM can make a blank DM42 case with 48g layout face-plate and we will install 48g ROM on our own

Note: DM42 case can totally serve as 48g case just by adopting hp42s approach to soft keys row. hence, making the last row reusable and not dedicated

If designed in a way a simpleton like me could install it, I'd buy one

I would prefer a ready made, fully installed functioning DM48. This is my own opinion.

I learned rpl with a 48s and I never left it. Now I have a 50g and a 48gx on android.
I thought that a dm42 would not sell much because I thought the superior rpl but I was wrong about sales volumes.
Now maybe are wrong who thinks that a dm48 would not be convenient?
Personally I would like a dm48 / 50 with the power of 50 and the keyboard of 48. And I would definitely buy it. :!:

then in 20 years we will ask for a dmPrime! ;)
