Thanks for the reply! My default CP was 437 so I changed it to 65001, then 1252, then 850. The problem turned out to be backup.bin. When I deleted it and reran the program, it worked. Entering CHCP without parameters in the cmd.exe window shows the active code page.
Changing the code page or the system locale to e.g. UTF-8 before starting the WP43s might do the trick.

CHCP 850
