I agree, when needing to employ not frequently-used features/variables/etc. it is much better to be able to select them from menus. Walter finds his recommended solution easy to recall and use because it came from his mind, so it's not unusual to see his reluctance to change. Hopefully several folks here all confirming this should be reconsidered will have enough weight to do so, if you agree, please comment.

If not changed, features which are non-intuitive or difficult to recall/use, like this, will simply go little- or fully unused; it would be a shame to hamper the excellent 43S for something like this, and after all, isn't early user testing's goal exactly to find issues like this, while workarounds are still possible?
I agree, Bob, I would also like to see menu selection for those functions.

I would like to add that I empathize with Walter. I've been in product development for over 30 years, and getting a handle on the right scope is never easy. Walter, I appreciate your and your fellow programmers' flexibility.

Release 0.21.2 is here https://gitlab.com/Over_score/wp43s/-/releases. Now you can also solve equations up to 9 levels of parantheses deep (should suffice). And the TIMER is available. Don't forget you can customize your 43S - use ASN.

Included in the release package is everything you may want to try, test, and check the 43S on your computer or your DM42. The manuals are still of 0.21.1.

Enjoy!

And if you discover anything suboptimal unknown yet, please report. There are certainly some issues - who finds one will get 18 test points.

I asked if there was a solution between 0.7 and 0.8
The answer is clearly "no root"
The root of 2 divided by 2 is the solution I was looking for. And there is no other solution between 0.7 and 0.8
So don't say it's different.
Is 0.707106... a root or not? You are becoming exasperating with your stubbornness.

Moreover, to force us to separate a variable name from the division operator...

I think I will stop testing your calculator. DM42 will be enough for me.
Sorry

That's called falsifying history by fake quoting. When I started the solver, it found in an independent search a different root which you conceal here. But it's all recorded above, no problem. You asked the solver for a solution between 0.7 and 0.8 and it answered "no root". Certainly incorrect but I can't tell you why (no witchcraft and sorcery here - we've to investigate).

Ah, and about the /: as long as we allow it in a name like df/dt we have to give the 43S a chance to differentiate this from df / dt. Thus, you cannot have π/4 at the same time but need π / 4 which costs you 1 keystroke extra.

Perhaps a pause is a good idea.

FWIW, I don't think I'll ever name my variables df or dt, nor anything else which is obviously a reserved word or symbol. And I fully expect a machine to behave weirdly if I did. Garbage in, garbage out is fine by me - although guards would be appreciated if possible.

Does this remove any ambiguity regarding the interpretation of df/dt?
What is the metric tensor in imperial units?

AFAICS, it doesn't. YMMV. (Maybe we need a list of 'obviously reserved words or symbols'. Good luck compiling.)

I just verified the following on Plus42:
  • It’s possible to create a variable named "PI÷4", "÷" being the division operator.
  • In an equation "PI÷4" is interpreted as PI divided by 4 and not as the variable "PI÷4"
So it seems that in equations the operator symbols are just considered as operators.

Thanks for verifying. That's a shining example of coherence, isn't it?

I would say it’s a good example of user friendliness ;)

As a user, Plus42 works exactly as I would expect, but I’m just a basic calculator user.
