If you're having problems with the hardware of a DM41X or DM42, post about them here.

Any news on when we might (if ever) expect keyboard upgrade kits for both/either DM42 or DM41X?

My DM42 has a keypad that is much less noisy and clicky than the DM41X one.
What is best ?

Sometimes one could really laugh, the device has been in production for three years now and the manufacturer is still struggling with teething problems. I can understand that the original HP keyboards cannot be copied so easily, but the fact that the manufacturer did not manage to scrutinize any prototype critically enough from the start is very strange. :?

Don't forget these calculators are "manufactured without tolerances" (as Michael claimed many months ago).

This is an enthusiast product made in small batches with several hand assembly steps. It’s not something being made on the scale of the latest iThing with dedicated factories and hundreds of millions of units produced per model. Who knows how many factory retoolings there are between batches of any SM product? We’re lucky to be able to buy them at the low cost they’re being sold for.

What does it mean that they are manufactured without tolerances? Sounds like some kind of a quantum physics feature. Does it mean that there are no tolerances specified in the designs and that it’s luck of the draw whether everything fits together?

I think there's even too much tolerance on this forum.

Exactly that's what Michael claimed.

It doesn't usually mean there are no tolerances in the manufacturing process itself but rather that there are none in the written specs. Every physical process has a tolerance built in. Most manufacturing houses have a default tolerance if none are specified in the design.

There is no manufacturing process without tolerances, in absolutely no production. In principle, tolerances must always be taken into account, regardless of how many individual steps the manufacturing process requires or how much manual effort there is in between. It should also not matter whether it is a small series or a mass product. As you can now clearly see, the effort to compensate for such weaknesses is much greater and more labour-intensive than if the manufacturer had taken care of quality assurance right at the start of production. You just have to look at how many returns have accumulated in the last three years, I think that alone is enough to determine that a lot has been missed here.
