This explains my inkling that the Free42/42S and DM42 register labels look different (beside the default font choice). It seems like DM42 replaced the X register label with a big X and replaced the glyph at 129 with a big Y altogether (for both fonts).Thomas Okken wrote: ↑Thu Oct 15, 2020 2:35 amʏ (129)
128 and 129 are used for the X: and Y: labels for those two stack registers; the X in those labels is a regular lowercase x.
Yes, they had to do that because within the existing character set, they wouldn't have been able to create matching labels for the Z and T registers. Of course adding small-caps versions of those letters would have been an option as well, but just using the existing uppercase letters instead was undoubtedly easier.
It's certainly understandable, and I probably would've done the same.
