Problem getting USB disk to access?

Post by kevinvinv »

I am trying to update for the first time... can't get the USB disk to show up on any computer. The DM42 screen says USB write mode... WARNING... etc

Nothing seems mounted on either windows or mac pc.

Any pointers?

Thanks!

If you're using Windows, did you install the driver for the calculator?

If not, you need to install https://www.swissmicros.com/dm42/tools/ ... .2.6.0.zip

and https://www.swissmicros.com/dm42/tools/ ... driver.zip

What is the DM42 version on your calculator ? Do you see Setup —> File —> Activate USB Disk ? If so, you don’t need DMtool to flash the firmware. Early versions of DM42 prior to v3.5 do not have a USB disk mode, but once updated to a newer version, you simply copy the flash binary to your USB drive from the PC or MAC, and it flashes automatically.

Yeah I see Activate USB Disk.... so I think I have a newer model.

Are you saying I DONT need any sort of driver on the PC/Mac then? It should just show up like a thumb drive?

That is what is not happening unfortunately at the moment... I am trying cables and etc.

Yes, it should just show up like any USB mass storage device. Those drivers were for older versions that you flashed from the PC / Mac over the cable. On the new version, it is flashed directly from the USB disk on the DM42. It sounds like some sort of cable problem. You have a micro USB connector, not a mini, right ?

Looks like I had a bad cable or a mis-alignment... the 3rd cable I tried worked... and seemed to go in a little deeper too. Thanks for all the help!!!

*ALL* versions of the DM42 have always had USB disk mode.

What changed in V3.5 was the ability to flash firmware from the FAT drive. Until then, the only way to update the DM42 was by throwing the CPU into DFU mode and for that, you did need libusb.

Since V3.5, it has been possible to update the DM42 by copying the .bin file to the USB disk and, as soon as the calc is disconnected, it "sees" the firmware file and flashes it to ROM. The old, DFU method is still possible today for those that want it, although there really is no need for it.
There are only 10 kinds of people in the world: those who understand binary and those who do not.
