Wondering if the recent Free42 2.5.18 up date has an effect on the Swissmicros DM42 at all?...Would that fix also apply to the DM42?

It looks like 2.5.18 only fixes pasting, Android compass and loading procedures, none of which apply to the DM42.

That's right. In fact, all of the changes since 2.5.16 (the version incorporated in the current DM42 firmware) are related to the Android version, the iOS version, and program pasting. None of them affect the DM42, and so there is no reason to update Free42 in the DM42 firmware yet.

With all due respect, if you are unable to tell if the changes in Free42, listed clearly each time it is updated, even apply to the DM42 at all, why are you concerned about them? If it was a Free42 bug-fix that you know affected your DM42 use, I can understand wanting to see that same fix in the DM42, but otherwise, it's not clear why it's a priority. I'm not giving you a hard time, I really don't understand, and would like to know.

Most of us here are also Free42 users and are aware when it changes, and SM is typically pretty quick (1-2 weeks) to release a DM42 update after serious bugs or significant improvements to Free42 are released, depending on what other work is happening at that time.

The reason is simple...I did not know one way or the other...If I knew it did not, then i would not ask...So there was a chance that it did effect the DM42 from the fact that i simply diud not know...So I asked...

It took a lot longer than 2 weeks for the last 2 DM42 updates to occur after Free42 bug fixes etc......I have no idea where you got 2 weeks...

I'm sorry, with all due respect, but your statements are only your positions.
Regarding Free42 v2.5.16:
- Thomas released this version on 2020-01-25 (https://thomasokken.com/free42/history.html)
- SM released RC1 on 18 Feb 2020 (posting from grsbanks viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2360#p13710),
RC2 (posting from mcc) on 30 Mar 2020, 03:53 (many thanks to mcc!)
and the final version 05 Apr 2020, 06:31 (again only mentioned here by mcc)
There is still no annonucement for DMCP-3.18 / DM42-3.15 in this forum.

In my view, there is no need to protect SwissMicros if public relations are weak.
Wha do we have an SwissMicros Calculator Forum, if this is only rarely used for Announcements?

You're completely right, that's nothing more than my view. And I'm certainly not protecting SM, just sharing my opinion, and asking a question about something I don't understand. Do you understand it? Your reply seems to imply you do, if so, please explain it.

In the case of 2.5.18, you're right, it was a bit over 3 weeks before SM released a new DM42 f/w with the Free42 improvements, and then another 6 weeks to get the platform independent state files working perfectly between DM42 and Free42, due to the very different nature of these platforms. Thomas noted that this was one of the largest changes in Free42 in a very long time, probably the largest since the DM42 was released.

But that doesn't change the overall average much of the DM42 trailing Free42 updates by a few weeks. At least not to me. YMMV.

It seems though that your real point is more about new DM42 announcements being timely, than about the updates themselves, which is a reasonable point. I can only say you should keep in mind that the update notices are provided by a volunteer, whom I happen to know was dealing with both work and health-related issues at the time.

But like you, I appreciate posts like those made by mcc (and Massimo in the past, and others too) to let folks know that new stuff has been made available; I do it too when I notice something. In a perfect world, with a large company, no doubt these tasks would all be well-timed and coordinated, but reality is somewhat different...

As for 'why do we have this Forum...?' I'd say for many reasons other than Announcements, such as having conversations like this one.

Exactly the OP used the forum to ask his question. I can't find any attack or insinuation.

Answers regarding new releases can be found N-times - each user could read and analyze thomas' history of free42 - and/or by finding it here.

Maybe the volunteer will get support by another active user, with good connections to SM. Hopefully he is well again!

Thanks for exchanging ideas and clarifying the views. Lets go on using our calculators, and hope we will find our answers here and on other places.
