2) nothing is old in North America in this matter.
Very nice story though. :D
America has more European culture than they want to admit, old is just relative.

I think it is important to share culture. The same for us (France) and UK; we left part of our culture in Canada (Quebec for us) and in some part of Africa. In the same way, some africans speaks a better french than us, and have a very good knowledge of the french history.

In other way, I spent much time in Scotland, share their culture and even wears some time a Kilt (anyway, in Brittany, we also have a celtic culture, with Tartans and kilts).

So I agree with you.

That must be a common pose for symbolic lions.

Told very nicely in principle but
2) nothing is old in North America in this matter.
Indigenous peoples of the Americas and their descendants would disagree.

Yes in principle but "this matter" was heraldry (see above). And don't you get worked up over indigenous peoples of the Americas and what's left of them. The vast majority of Europeans going to the Americas were desperate lower class at home before and behaved accordingly. Wasn't really prime choice overall.

Speaking of heraldry, I recently found out why in the cartoon Underdog, one of the villains was named Simon Bar Sinister. In heraldry to have a line on the left (bar sinister) means there was an illegitimate child in the line. In other words, a bastard. What a way to name a cartoon character!

Interesting! Thanks Tom for that insight, I wondered many times where that character's name came from.Very Interesting cartoon character naming process indeed. Would have been interesting to hear that discussion in the writer's room.

Hi,

here comes the Red Dragon of Wales as a first try:

Image

Opened a vector file SVG with Libre Office Draw, exported it as bitmap
and reduced its colour to 1-bit with PaintshopPro 7.04 (ctrl-shift-1) running Ubuntu (wine).

At the moment the red colour of the dragon and the green of the ground results
in a picture which has lesser contrast than Erik's Dutch Lion.
Maybe this can be amended somehow ...

Here's my attempt at the Welsh flag, based on the SVG in Wikimedia Commons.

In Inkscape, I changed the colour of the grass to 25% grey and the colour of the dragron to 50% grey, and exported to a PNG of 400x240.

In The Gimp, I converted to 1-bit black and white in pattern mode, touched up some stray pixels, and exported as a BMP.

EDIT: Replaced it with a more up-to-date Welsh flag.
