There's nothing to stop you taking a DM42 or DM41X apart and replacing the keys with a set that you had made elsewhere. Is that really true? To my knowledge, any incompatibility between the pgm and qspi can cause the error message you saw, and it happens because you are limited to replacing one at a time.
