Re: Updating from 3.3 to 3.10
Those numbers all look correct. On your usual PC, do any devices with exclamation marks appear in Windows Device Manager when you connect the DM42 and "Activate USB Disk"? If so, then delete those devices in Device Manager, 'eject' the USB device if possible (but it shouldn't matter since ...

If your QSPI is faulty/corrupt, you have "nothing to lose" in trying either 4. or 5. as described in the manual. http://www.swissmicros.com/dm42/doc/dm42_user_manual/#qspi_load_menu If you successfully manage to format the QSPI (Maybe you lose some space if there are corrupt blocks in it,...

Re: 8 Level Stack?
Perhaps you were using a WP-34S? I don't think Free42 or DM42 has ever had an 8 level stack (and neither has the HP-42S).

Re: Need a replacement LCD
It might not be the ribbon cable. It might be the connector. If so, buying a new LCD wouldn't help.
Re: Countdown
If register space was an issue (which it probably isn't), you could pack a few small integers (5 bits each) into a single register.
Re: Countdown
Well, if you want to pick any letter from A to Z, you just need to pick a number from 65 to 90 and do XTOA. But I suspect you want to pick either a vowel or a consonant, so that doesn't work without a bit of manipulation. So in that case, using registers is probably easiest. You'd only need 5 regist...
Re: Countdown
I'm familiar with Countdown. I even watched the first show when Channel 4 started. (It was such a novelty at that time in the UK to have a choice of four TV stations!)
Anyway, I'm wondering why you need to store the alphabet.
