Re: 43S Alternative key layout --> WP43C

Re. the Greek letters: I feel we may be at the limit of what the faceplate ca handle already. I also don't see myself having the need to type Greek nearly as much as Latin letters.

Do we need them on the "hard" keys at all?

Just asking...

I think the best offers on the table are still STRNG and/or STR.
I have one more suggestion:

aSTR

where a is the greek alpha. This would clearly make STR understood to be in the alphanumeric string context.

??
Sure would, and also set it apart from STK.

Might also look cool... :-)

You will find the functions under "ALPHA String Operations".
https://archived.hpcalc.org/greendyk/hp ... ed/13.html
I am not sure if ALPHA in this case is referring to the family of functions, or the alpha register?

Re: 43S Alternative key layout --> WP43C

What are the options though? Fair point. :-) Options therefore are: STRING (too long) STR (too much like STK) STRNG (can work) STRG (can work) I choose STRNG and the result looks like this. Any objections to the summary or the logic? See implementation on Layout 1A. http://cocoon-creations.com/down...

Re: 43S Alternative key layout --> WP43C

Does "character" suggest single character manipulations? Good question: my thoughts were that it refers to character based manipulations, including multiple characters like shifting of a string of characters for example. I understand your thinking. I can't help noticing that "string of characters" ...

Re: 43S Alternative key layout --> WP43C

Good idea. I like the base word: “character”. I like that more than “text”, because “text” largely refers to paragraphs or even more. CHR.FN would be ideal if I can fit it in the space. CR.FN is too vague and does not remind of character. CS.FN also is far from intuitive. I even think CHAR may be e...

Re: 43S Alternative key layout --> WP43C

At the moment I can't give a good reason why I don't like text and variants either. But maybe you can introduce another abbreviation, E for Edit. This is what is happening here. STR.E But aren't the operations functions - i.e. don't they take (an) argument(s), and return a result? In my understandi...

Re: 43S Alternative key layout --> WP43C

... Changing the name appeals to me, although they seem better described as "string functions" than "text functions" - at least to me. On the other hand, STR might not be a good name, since STK already exists. S.FN I think it's so rarely used, and then by the people who use P.FN also. EDIT: A.FN Ma...

Re: 43S Alternative key layout --> WP43C

Hi, thank you for checking in detail, H2X !! You're most welcome! Thank you for your excellent work! :-) The change with a.FN was discussed a few days ago when we realised that a.FN actually is a programming group and has no functions that you would directly use, therefore, the only reason we had i...

So, do we have opinions on the new L1 and L1A ?

Image
I like EQN on the same row as MATX and STAT, and VIEW is OK next to SHOW.

I also liked ALPHA.FN on the same key as ALPHA. What happened? Did I sleep?
