DM42 wins over WP34S in accuracy..

Post by zeno333 »

Some have pointed out that the WP34S in double precision modeis also accurate to 34 decimal places compared to the DM-42...But there is another factor to consider when picking the title of worlds most accurate calculator ever in physical form, entering large numbers. If you multiply 12345678987654321 times 7777777...and divide that result by 7777777 on the DM-42 you get the full correct result back of 12345678987654321. This is NOT the case if you try to do that with a WP34S...The DM-42 is the most accurate physical calculator ever made, it wins the Title!!!!

PS, I say most accurate "physical" calculator, since there are computer program calculators that are more accurate like the Windows "HiPERCalc and the MPCalcRB computer program.

Nope. The 34S has the same accuracy in this case. The difference is in the UI of the 34S which only allows the entry of 12 digits at a time. If I do the following with DBLON:

1.23456789E16
ENTER
87654321
+
7777777
X
7777777
/

I get the expected result of 1.2345678987654321E16
DM42: β00043, β00065, 00357 / DM41X: β00054, 00445 / DM32: β00278
DM10L: 017/100, DM11L: 00121, DM12L: 02005, DM15L: 00523, DM16L: 00008, DM41L: 00111

Very round about way of getting it down...Since one does not have to go through hoops on the DM42 I still maintaine that it keeps the title of miost accurate physical calculator ever made.

We ran out of RAM on the 34S to hold a longer entry buffer plus the display is limited. I'm kind of surprised that ignorance of a purposeful limitation is claimed to be less accurate. We have several examples where the 34S is producing a correctly rounded result and the Intel decimal library isn't. The former cannot be considered less accurate.

I willing to go way out on a limb here and state that if the Intel decimal library is more accurate than the 34S for any built in function, I'll attempt to fix the latter.

It won't take long anymore and I might have to visit my UCP for my own protection.
WP43 SN00000, 34S, and 31S for obvious reasons; HP-35, 45, ..., 35S, 15CE, DM16L S/N# 00093, DM42β SN:00041

So, sardonic, non-subtle irony is not passing off as traditional european behaviour? (Strange -- but, please, notice the very subtle irony in my spelling of "behaviour").
