Flashing DM-41 firmware on DM-15

Post by keithdalby »

Pictured is a DM-15 with a DM-41 keyboard print-out sitting on top of it.

I intend to play with the DM-41 firmware to get used to it before committing to buying a new unit. Two questions:

1) what's the best way to attach the keyboard print-out without it being too permanent or leaving a sticky residue on the device? (I'm not practically inclined, so struggle with these basic ideas).
2) are there any issues with firmware compatibility?

Thanks in advance.

If you have an arts & crafts shop nearby you can buy temporary glue in aerosol form. That should work and it should be easy enough to remove with a damp cloth once you're done with it. Just spray it on the reverse side of your keyboard overlay, not on the calculator :)

There are no problems with firmware compatibility with one condition. The electronics of the DM15 and the DM41 are absolutely identical as long as your DM15 is one that does have a real time clock chip in it. To test this theory, switch it off, press and hold the [LN] key while switching on and observe the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. If you see "RTC" then you're good to go. If you see "NORTC" then the calculator probably won't work because the DM41 requires the RTC to emulate the functions of the Time Module built into the HP-41CX emulated by the DM41.
There are only 10 kinds of people in the world: those who understand binary and those who do not.

Thank you grsbanks. It does have RTC, so I'll play with that tonight.

I'm certain I'll be able to borrow some aerosol temporary glue from someone at work too. Thanks for your advice.

Didn't have the aerosol temporary glue so I used prit-stick. Should be temporary enough and should be able to be washed off with a damp cloth afterwards.

I hope.

(Just an observation, when showing firmware version and battery voltage, the text on the top line seems to extend beyond the screen space)

That happens on my 41L as well as the 15. I'm using v 25 of the firmware.

I woke up from a nightmare last night that the paper keyboard overlay wouldn't come off. I'm happy to confirm that glue stick (Pritt Stick,
other brands are available) works well for sticking a plastic overlay over the keyboard of the DM-15 and, as can be seen in this image, it can be easily removed with a damp sponge.

Out of interest, what did you print the overlay on? It looks surprisingly good!
