Another 43S poll

Post by Walter »

After Christmas is before Christmas, so assume you have another wish free: there are alternatives for the softkeys shown in the menu for angular conversions.

Which do you prefer for the 43S? Please think about the market it shall succeed on.

Warning: Math is a language designed to be understood worldwide, independent of the language you learned first. Hence, this is a poll with weighted votes. Voters with English as their mother tongue will get weight 1, voters with a different mother tongue will get weight 10 for obvious reasons (before you ask: to balance some unfair advantages). Please don't cheat.

I voted for b) because in a ) the meaningful information represents only 3% to 6% of the displayed pixels with the other pixels being identical for each function, which is not the best way to easily convey the right information to the end user.

I also vote for B. The first option is hardly readable, and the second one, especially for D.MS reminds the actual format to use.

I voted for (b) for the following reasons (all are only my opinion): 1.) the information is much more clearly and cleanly displayed to the user; and 2.) most users will easily recognize the abbreviations in (b) but may not easily recognize the symbolic notation in (a). Thanks for asking, Walter!

I voted for (b) for 2 reasons. Consistency both with the classic machines we are trying to emulate (and improve) and also with the rest of the 43S key labels (Enter, STO, RCL, PROG, LOOP, etc.). But also because of the issue Didier explained so well. Even with the superb LCD contrast we've seen on the DM42, the tiny symbols look so much alike it would take slow and careful inspection to decode the symbols.

And it has to be said: 10-to-1 is a bit ridiculous isn't it? Doesn't every potential customer have the same voice?

Thanks. Quite clear results so far. :)

So the 10:1 rule doesn't have to become effective (an act of self-defense in a world dominated by the English language currently - I'll continue preferring +/- over CHS).

It took me ages to twig why XEQ was so labelled on HP calculators!

I (a native English speaker) vote for "B" as well.

While I can admire the wordless elegance of "A", the likely buying market is all used to HP decades-old convention, I think.
Also, it's one thing to discern a tiny degree marker ° from " on a 24-inch monitor, and another thing altogether on a pocket calculator, no matter how nice its screen.

Me too. However, I find the "crow foot" arrows a bit noisy. What about solid black triangles instead?
What is the metric tensor in imperial units?
