That's feature creep no more, that's feature rush!
Heh heh! Not to worry. The 12 GHz, 512-core processor that runs for three weeks on one charge that I want in the new unit should be able to handle the extra load of a color screen.
Do you need hot water for your shower?
As well as for my tea ;)

...I often has to stop myself from reaching for my DM42 to switch it "really off" since it is displaying something.

:)
indeed!
I was doing it two minutes ago: "My God, always on: the batteries will end soon!" :)
Except that the technology used in the DM42 is Sharp's so-called "memory LCD", which requires no power at all to maintain something on the screen. The booster that generates 5V for the LCD from the battery's 3V is switched off...
Good to know. I just received mine this week and I was looking everywhere to solve the "problem" of the screen staying on. :)

I took the iconoclast's route - deleted all these nice pictures and only left the one showing a blank screen. Sorry, artists, but this might be ascribed to my aesthetical fundamentalism (none else).
I'm taking a similar path. I don't like it at all when a different image appears every time I turn it off so I only have one visually very appealing image in the OFFIMG-folder on my DM42 and DM41X.

I think it's a bit of a shame that there is no way to select an image manually without an USB connection to the PC.
My programmable calculators - former: CBM PR100, HP41CV, HP28S, HP11C - current: HP48G(256kB), HP35S, Prime, DM41X, DM42

I have one image for each type of device, it includes device name (like DM42, C37 etc) my name and emailadres. If I've lost my calculator, the finder can contact the legal owner. :)
